Pure Rebel for Pulp

I'm not known for Black and White photography,

but here I am doing it anyway.  Anytime I send off a shoot to a model I have worked with, and I don't include color photos it is with some serious trepidation.  I don't want to disappoint the people I work with, but also I think I need to serve the images in a way that looks best.  I'm known for color.  Temperance, Into the Wild, Ask the Dust all are different versions of a similar palette I try to draw from when I create.

Pulp just looks better in black and white as much as I'm loathe to accept it.  Every now and then I get some color photos that take process well, but I've been working on this black and white preset for a couple of years (as long as I have been shooting digital honestly) and I have to say I'm really stoked with how it looks, and I'm coming to terms with Pulp being a black and white series even if that means its not as well received as other projects.

I say all of this knowing that the big Wet Plate project I'm working on is also going to be entirely Black and White, so maybe these two things go hand in hand in the long run...who can say.

Minor tangent out of the way...Pure Rebel and I shot for Pulp a couple of months ago, and I am really really happy with the outcome.  There is something about the mixed lighting I am using for this series that really takes my black and white edit well.  It becomes this milky almost wet plate looking tonal range from shadows to highlight, and is made even better by Pure Rebel's incredible ability to move in front of the camera.

I love having such control over the directional light and fill by using the modeling light to balance out the window that serves as the main light for most of these images.  The space we are shooting in is very tiny, so its nearly impossible to use a fill flash that doesn't immediately overtake the brightness of the window.  I could put a light outside, but I think my neighbors would probably take issue with that...plus I like to be rather low key.

I'm still not sure about Pulp.  I think its going to be a very limited series.  I sort of already took the entire set apart.  I love the images, but I'm having a hard time seeing how I can do it differently shoot after shoot.  Once I am done editing everything I have shot for it.  I might do a very limited Patreon only e-book physical copy release to bring it to an official end.

Until then check out the link below for our full shoot.

What is your opinion of including 2-3 styles\color tones of the same image or set for the model even if it doesn't fit your concept for the book?
