Finding a location for nature in LA can be hard. I've found if I just plug "canyon" into google maps though I can usually find some place where I can escape the California sun.
My shoot with Kelly we drove to a place I very much don't remember. I was somewhere near the valley. It was an intensely hot day, and we hiked along a cliffs edge overlooking the city. I love the challenge of shooting in a new place. The challenge of creating somewhere a lot of people just might walk past. Not every location can be icebergs on the edge of a glacier in the arctic circle, but I do think every place has a feeling, and it is my job to capture that as best I can.
Kelly and I hiked through thick grass tall enough to block the late day sun, so we played around with shooting in it a lot. Bedding down parts and shooting some really beautiful images. I loved the feeling. I haven't felt small in grass since I was a kid running through fields. Shooting with the Sigma 50mm really let me feel like I was there in the moment, and in the photos as I worked on them later.
