On my way to Seattle I made a bit of a detour. One of my long term internet friends, Anastasia, and I had planned to shoot on a trip down south that ended up falling through, and I didn't want to leave the east coast before we got to meet and take photos together. So, after two years of following her self portraiture on her tumblr I made the drive to Appalachia, so that we could finally make it happen, and it was amazing.
I grew up hiking the Appalachian Mountains quite a bit, but the beautiful forests always find new ways to excite me, and just being in them is inspiring enough, but getting spend time hiking, and photographing somebody that I have admired for so long was really fantastic. It was a sunny day, so made our way into some of the denser forest and I really played around with the way bright dappled lighting can be used in photos to show a lot of depth. This way let me keep the light on Anastasia nice and soft, while showing a huge tonal range in the greens of the forest. As the sun fell we found more and more little spots to shoot in the beautiful late day light.I'm really really glad I managed to make the trip down, and it was absolutely worth the extra two nights sleeping in the van and 16 hours of driving. These were all shot with either my Sigma 85mm or 50mm lenses.
