While Mika was in town I decided I wanted to play around with a technique I haven't really touched since when I was at Antonelli...Soft Focus. Every photo class I have ever taken at some point would mention Vaseline on the lens, and so back in 2006 I decided to try it, and got pretty cool results, and with that I went on to never us it again.
Until Mika agreed to let me play around with another soft focus technique last month...the black stockings. All you really have to do for this is buy a black pair of stockings, pull one over the lens. How tightly you pull it will affect the sharpness of the image, and you can cut it give a sort of sharp spot in the image too.
I decided it would be best to experiment with this with a harsher lighting as I was mostly looking to the softness as more of a means to cut contrast than I really was soft focus, so instead of my usual 60 inch soft boxes I decided to us my profoto and a beauty dish, and for the most part I got the desired effect. I think next time I will probably try this out in harsh sun light or something along those lines. I will also probably let the stocking sit considerably looser as I lost almost all of the soft focus element the more I shot and the tighter i pulled it.
Regardless I am still pretty happy with the results, and very lucky to have such a talented model to experiment with!
I'm updating from Iceland right now, so I hope you can excuse my brevity! We are literally posting from a remote village in a campground by lantern light.
