Portrait Session with Vivid Vivka

I've been in love with the creative brain of Vivka since the first time I stumbled across her model mayhem bio.  She is a goddamn tour de force, a one women artistic army that can make her visions come to life like no other.  Part of my path as a photographer has been learning when to get into the driver seat, and when do hop in and go along for the ride.  With Vivka I'm a in the car behind using my adaptive photo skills to figure out how to translate her vision.  Its a different roll than I usually take, but one that I love because its a challenge to keep up.

Most of what we shoot I unfortunately can't share on Patreon.  I'm the hired gun for CosplayDeviants, and they end up owning the rights to everything I shoot for them, but we always manage to fit in a little something extra for fun, for ourselves, or in this case for the creator of the creator of this amazing cloak (I swear there is a cloak in the dropbox folder)

This late afternoon shoot was a little bit of a challenge.  The subtraction lighting in this little door way was absolutely beautiful, but when I tried to shoot with my 24-70mm or my 85mm the field of view was too wide.  Even with the lens hood on I was still getting way too much lens flare for usable photos, so after a couple adjustments I threw on the 70-200mm F2.8 with the lens hood (I always shoot with lens hoods in studio or outside) and that allowed me to get a narrower field of view.  No more lens flare and in turn beautifully saturated colors.  Since the light was so perfectly even it gave us the entire space to work with for photos, and the little bit of sun light that kicked in through and over the door was an amazing rim/hair light.  What more can you ask for?  Not a lot.

If you enjoy this quicky of a shoot, I have a bunch of Vivka and my older collaborations in the archive.  We've done some crazy shoots from bedroom shoots to crazy clowns in empty apartment building hallways.  It really runs the gamut.

Nope, I never felt like spending the $200 a decent UV filter costs. A lot of times I use a polarizing filter for landscapes, but aside from that no filters.

Great shots! You mention the use of a lens hood in studio and outdoors, do you also use UV filters for truer colors?

These are PHENOMENAL! I don't even know what to say. It's interesting hearing about the "driver vs. passenger" aspect of your job, that hadn't occurred to me. Thank you for sharing, this is why I love your work so much!
