[Ad-Free/Uncensored] How Apocalypse Now ALMOST Ended

The struggle to end Apocalypse Now wasn’t just creative—it was existential. In this episode, we dive into the original, psychedelic battle ending that Coppola abandoned, the year-long torment to find something better, and the mythological breakthrough sparked by a mysterious advisor. You’ll hear how Brando’s refusal to cooperate nearly derailed the film, why one pickup shot cost $70K, and how the symbolic, surreal finale finally came together. It’s a saga of contradiction, chaos, and ultimate transformation—both on and off the screen.

Thanks so much for your support!

Thanks so much! The Dennis Jakob aspect was fascinating to discover and the epiphany about the contradictions was such a great find because it not only explains a lot about the mindset behind the ending's meaning, but leads into Coppola's realization in the next episode that the carabao sacrifice would express that contradiction in pure cinematic grammar. I understand where those people are coming from and was fully aware that some would have that reaction when I made the decision to do it. It is a strange and thought-provoking issue that everyone is trying to wrap their minds around. My hope is that the reaction to my use of generative AI isn't based on a black & white mentality and that those who are very upset are still considering my specific use of it. The whole situation is freaky, but it seems AI is here to stay. Personally, I think the solutions to those problems should come in the form of government regulations as opposed to the opponents of AI attempting to enforce a sense personal responsibility at the lowest level (which seems to be how things are done in the US at least considering how corporations rarely have to answer for any issues they cause to the public). I did hear about the 4K Hearts of Darkness! That's very exciting! I wish there would be a yearly screening of Apocalypse Now on IMAX across the country. Seeing the attention my series has gotten, I have to imagine that people would show up whether they have seen the movie dozens of times or are being introduced to it. Museum of the Moving Image in NYC bought a print of 2001: A Space Odyssey and screens it every year in 65mm. I think we need that for some of these classic movies that really deserve to be seen in a theater.

Thanks for the feedback. Generative AI is something that I avoid in my main videos, but will occasionally play around with it on here in bonus posts with the sole purpose being its use. I did not take the decision lightly, but I ultimately felt that it was necessary for the circumstances. I was never going to be able to hire someone to illustrate this section–not only the cost, but time constraints as well. I’ve been juggling this video with a cross-country move, back to back sicknesses, and a toddler with asthma. Whereas I don’t feel like these issues should excuse anything, if you want more context, there it is. I’m honestly not sure if I would have tried to source various clips for that section even if I had the extra week or two I would need to do it.

I apologize to you as someone who supports the channel directly and I understand the ethical issues that the use of AI brings up, but I have rationalized this particular use as something that would boost the video’s potential for the broader audience at the expense of a relatively small faction of my core audience. As of now, my analytics are telling me it was the right decision. I don’t think of it as ‘art’ with any kind of artistic intent. It’s simply visualizing something for which no images exist. Some might argue that if I can’t afford to hire an artist for this, then I shouldn’t be able to do it at all. That might be a valid argument, but as a creator trying to get to the point where I could hire outside help and pay them what they should be paid, using the tools that are available to me on the way to that point when certain circumstances arise not only relives some of the burden that goes into making these videos, but sometimes makes the videos themselves possible (e.g. AI voice when I had Covid and RSV).

Another great episode! Wild to see how it could have turned out. I liked the bits of Coppola talking about contradictions of the characters and the war; and his "secret mentor" that sent him the inspirational literature. Too bad that sooo many commenters on the youtube version are upset about the AI pics; I didn't mind it. Seems like an overreaction when it's a few minutes out of hours of video essay. And it does help visualize the scenes. Also, did you see that there's a 4K restoration of 'Hearts of Darkness' coming to (some) theaters in July? :O Probably not where I am, but still worth looking out for.

I know you've used gAi to do audio and pictures before but this the first post that I've just stopped watching. As a creative person yourself and one I admire I'd ask you to reconsider the use of gAi in your projects.

Haha thanks. I have to say, “Bonasera, Bonasera” before each line to get into the mindset. I’m kinda sad that his part is finished. I’ll have to find a reason to do some vids on other Brando movies.

CinemaTyler

I really do like you reading Brando's lines in his voice.
