Redwoods National Park for The Rising Lands
Added 2015-01-05 23:25:01 +0000 UTCUntil 2014 I hadn't even been to Redwoods National Park. When you leave San Fransisco heading north you have a really long winding drive up the coast to the Oregon boarder, from which Redwoods is only about 15 minutes, or you can shoot up I-5 save yourself a couple of hours of tight fisted foggy road driving. Also, I really didn't understand how to take pictures of gigantic trees.
This year my buddy Steven (thisnormallife.tumblr.com) convinced me that we should stop on my February trip, but we were completely rained out. Three days in a park that is mostly inaccessible due to flooding just made me want to come back and give it another go. So while I was on my way from Portland to San Fransisco for my Zivity workshop I stopped for three days, and got the Redwoods experience I was looking for. Every day began with the fog bank rolling into Crescent City, Ca. I spent a lot of time trying to find the perfect spots to compose with such large subjects. It was an exciting challenge, and my 17-40mm lens saw a ton of use.
On my last day in Redwoods I finally found the herd of Elk that had been all over the radio. About 30 cows and one giant herd bull were grazing in the meadow, and I spent four hours taking there photos as the bull chased off other juvenile and mature bull elk. It was a crazy time to be observing these animals as the tension escalated over and over from grazing to defense and back to grazing. I tried to keep my distance as best as possible, but there was an occasional moment that they got closer than I would have liked.
After such an exciting couple of days it is very likely I'll be making the stop in Redwoods again the next time I find myself out west.
