POD 121: Cactological pursuits with The Cactus Store

In this episode I speak with Max Martin, Christian Cummings, and Carlos Morera, the three founders of The Cactus Store, an LA and NY based habitat for exotic plants and xerophiles that blends art, science, and community building initiatives. The Cactus Store group create botany-oriented documentaries, conservation education and more. They are some of my favorite people.

I'm releasing this interview a bit earlier than I'd like, this version has audio issues in the first 30 minutes and the video will be uploaded soon. I had covid and was trying to finish a written article about the FDA DOI hearings. I have not forgotten about the final dispatch.

Happy New Year everybody, I'm extremely confident that 2025 is going to have the best new interviews (and short docs) of any year on this Patreon. We just finished the Picked rough cut and should have something in January. Thank you everybody for your support, a lot of great things are on the way!

Kinda unbelievable that they try and draw a comparison between invasive species and natural cross breeding. Can someone please explain how hoping over an ocean to a different biome is the same as 2 planets from the same ecosystem cross pollinating?

Nate Mac

It reminded me of the One Ring

Sorta like in a weird way

The natural/synthetic distinction is too language-semantic-thinking thing... What the meat of the discussion is usually about is a "good/bad" evaluation. This evaluation tends to be very emotional as it is directly related to survival & well-being. Now the word 'natural' has (nowdays) a very strong association with the word 'good'. If one is thinking in very dualistic manner - which often is the case when emotions lead thinking - it logically follows that 'synthetic' (/'man-made') -> 'unnatural' ->'bad'. Even the argument "human creations are natural because humans are natural" itself tends to be based on the first assumption; "synthetic isn't bad because it actually is natural, which means it is good" the argument implicitly says. While "everyhting humans do is natural since humans come from nature" is not untrue, it dilutes the meaning of words 'natural' & 'synthetic' in it's pursuit of easening the grip of dualistic emotional thinking. Which is why I don't personally find it to be very compelling argument! There *are* meaningful distinctions between the things that humans create & things that emerge out of nature - if not in anything else, at least in the very processs of how those things come into being. (Although typically that process of coming into being will have some implications on the qualities a thing has.) Analysing these words would be a whole damn book in itself, but yeah - it's usually about good/bad what people argue about, projected onto the natural/synthetic distinction.

Honey-el

Rude? I'd call it constructive criticism. I adore Hamilton and his content. But yes, it's true, I found this unlistenable for the first 20 minutes. Hopefully he can invest in some very decent mics with some of this patreon cash!

Matthew Kinnin

That was unnecessarily rude.

Dylan

I've always been of the opinion that humans are part of nature and, therefore, everything they do and produce is "natural". I think that this line of thinking that people fall into, where they're so caught up in this concept of natural-ness and are so repulsed by anything synthetic, is the result of people's tendency to view humanity, and by extension themselves, as being something that is removed or distinct from the rest of the natural world. We're strange beasts, us humans. That much is sure.

Dylan

Then why are you acting like you make the rules. Especially for something trivial. Are you 12?

M

This Was tried with cannabis and ended up just being a corporation trying to steal genetic information from growers and patient it as there own work would hate to see the same happen again

sam

TBM or Bridgessi?

Creepy Crawley

I really liked what was said about humans creating stuff as a part of nature as any other organism doing something that we might deem "natural." How is a beaver dam different from a human dam? Are beaver dams synthetic? Something that I think about often.

Macray Braxton

It gets better past the first 20 mins or so. Worth a listen

Thor Correia

This was a really interesting episode! The curiously wonderful, silent, and secret lives of plants is a story worth telling.

gossamer

Second the best I’m afraid. I don’t make the rules.

Meek

It's really quite unlistenable.

Matthew Kinnin

fuck off

Steve

Lol I was wondering what was meant by FAA 🤣

Creepy Crawley

The FAA?!? Wow I didn't realize that the Federal Aviation Administration had anything to do with drug enforcement. Now you see this is obviously what can happen when you let your neighbor's dog comment on patreon. I have to admit though that's a pretty smart dog being able to have complex thoughts and type but he or she obviously needs more work on their federal agencies. It's the DEA that handles drug enforcement, you know D for dog, sorry I mean drug... How did you not notice that? I'm guessing you meant FDA. The FDA is responsible for assuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, the nation's food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation. This is why you proof read and check your facts before hitting enter. Sorry about giving you a hard time but I just couldn't resist, too easy of a target. You should really think about editing that, it's embarrassing.😂🤣

The San Pedro relative living in my HM signature peyote pot is so hilariously oversized for it. Some day I'll get the right thing growing in it, and maybe it'll be of size to eat in time for my deathbed trip...

CSN

Sign me up brother! 🌵🌵🌵

Tom Suazo

Every time a guests Instagram is mentioned I pause the show to go follow them 🙃 I really want to go on one of these plant-photographing trips now! The sound wasn’t that bad, definitely worth it. I appreciated the nuance in the discussion about ethics around having plants.

vitalsplease

Ok business idea: it's like 23andme but it's PCandme and it's home genetic testing for cacti cultivar collections.

Ben

Sucks for you

Armchair Idiot

Not when it's quality, intelligent content.

M

Great discussion, very interesting. However, at the end when you say, ‘Alright…’ as if to say, ‘now we are about to talk about the reaaallly interesting, secret stuff,’ was quite mean.

Meek

First the worst.

Meek

Hamilton will you ever rerelease the peyote pot ?

Tony D

I definitely wouldn’t say it’s safe to say no. The FAA is extremely vague on purpose. It’s use is usually in cases where law enforcement finds it difficult to prove illegal activity directly. Like if someone was producing mescaline and methallylescaline, one is federally controlled, the other in a grey area where if they wish to make an arrest, they’ll likely take advantage of that grey area to bust them for the mescaline production.

Neighbors Dog

Excellent discussion. I was a bit surprised towards the beginning when one of them mentioned GMOs as being a cause of colony collapse (especially when everything else they said seemed to come from a place of deep understanding of plants/ecosystems).

Sam Thede

We plants are happy plants… this feels like a Terrence McKenna sit down. < 3

Unable to listen because of the painful audio quality

That's funny, I love go too. I have a traditional bamboo set. It is hard to find average players. It's a very dedicated player base with many high level players. Hard to get into without players at your level

M

I really liked the idea that plants draw us humans to them to cultivate and “protect” them as a consequence of their immobility. It gives them an advantage in survival/reproducing while the ones that humans weren’t attracted didn’t have the advantage to spread their genetics, and possibly perished. It’s another way that we’ve selected or engineered plant genes
