Vampire Couple: Mathias & Hazelmere (special preview)

There is a house near yours, it sits on a hill overlooking everything, looking very much like something a mad scientist would love. For the longest time you were certain the house had been abandoned, it was part of how you got your own place so cheap. The owner wanted to sell badly, having gotten sick of staring at that old house on the hill.

You were happy with it, and the old house didn’t bother you. You felt sort of bad for the old place as it was just sitting up there to go to waste. It was a beautiful home, just needed some attention that was all.

Then, one day, you noticed a bunch of trucks and vehicles pulling up the old the house. Bit by bit the place transformed. Repairs were made, shingles replaced, the lawn was pampered, pruned, and turned into art. The whole place was painted and spackled into looking like a shining crown jewel at the top of the hill, painted pink with blue shingles and fixtures. It looked almost dollish.

The only thing was, you weren’t sure if someone was moving in. You hadn’t seen any moving trucks or lights on in the place. You were eager to have a neighbor nearby, friends you could visit with, have over for drinks, game nights even. There just didn’t seem to be anybody. Until one night, when the lights were on at the house.

There was someone for sure there, as you often caught the mailman delivering their mail, packages being left at the doorstep. It just didn’t seem like anyone was there during the day. It was only during the evening when you saw in life in the place.

It came time that you worked up the courage, and after work one day, you went to the house with flowers and some homemade cookies to welcome them. Standing at the door, you were rehearsing over and over what you were going to say in your head. How to excuse yourself for not coming by sooner, how to charm, how to impress.

The door opened and standing there is a tall ethereal woman. Her white hair is cut into a bob so sleek and so blunt the ends look like a razor’s edge. She’s wearing a dark red robe which only makes her skin look all the whiter.

“My, my,” she purrs with a seductively smokey voice. “What have we here?”

Your voice hides in the back of your throat. She’s so pretty, so different. The angular contours of her face and the radiant ruby color of her eyes makes her look so otherworldly. Your lip trembles as your open your mouth, forcing your voice to peek out.

“Who is at the door, starling?”

“I think it is our neighbor,” the woman says with a smirk.

You nod, barely making a grunting noise in reply.

A man appears, his long white hair is pulled all to one side, giving him a disheveled bedroom look. He too is wearing a robe, only it is pastel pink. He too has the same ghostly visage as the woman, haunting yet beautiful.

“Hello,” your voice squeaks.

“Why don’t you come in? It is so late and the mosquitos are absolutely offensive.” he offers out his hand to you. “Mathias,” he says.

“Hello,” you can’t stop squeaking.

“This is my partner, Hazelmere,” he says.

She takes the flowers from you, burying her nose amongst the petals. “Beautiful. My Mathias loves flowers.”

They lead you to a parlor where there is a fireplace lit and comfortable furniture before it, including a massive furry rug.

“Come sit, we have been curious about our little neighbor.” Mathias speaks exuberantly. “But we have not wanted to just magically appear.”

“We did that already,” Hazelmere chuckles. “We were planning to have a dinner with all the neighbors, but it seems you are the only one close by.” She places the flowers in a vase then strides over to where you’re sitting.
