[JJK] Thinking out loud

SPOILERS AHEAD!

This post is nothing but my thoughts on interpretations of Sukuna. Also a quick sketch.

How am I supposed to draw him???

In a modern/uncle AU.

It is possible he gained his extra features through the absorption of his twin and was born this way. In which case, what does he look like if his twin is born healthily, separate from him? If this is the secret behind his extra arms and eyes, sure, he loses those - but does he also lose body mass? If you look at the official art, especially the earliest true form illustrations, his face looks like it's wider than a normal human face. The nose, the jaw, everything, look at the neck too. That's two humans in one. Does this mean that normally he wouldn't be this large? Would he have less muscle mass too?

I'm also curious: what does his twin look like? Are they both hunks? Or is his twin smaller, like Itadori Jin, due to whatever circumstances? (We also know that the body arranges itself around the soul.)

I have my own preference and opinion, but things are not as simple.

Another part of the dilemma is what people like, what they are used to. So, Dear Patrons, if you have any comments, thoughts about this, please share them in the comments.

Some behind-the-scenes stories

Before his full reincarnation, I used to draw him in a way I imagined him before he supposedly "deformed" himself, and how I imagined him fully reincarnating in a modern AU. A bit leaner, features closer to the typical JJK daddy style (lol).

So I came up with this devil. I was just guessing maybe he even had a different hair color before the "transformation"?

...but then the reincarnation happened. So I started to draw him either in his true form, or his true form minus the extras (="true gains"), for modern AU. However, my first version of him and "true gains" Sukuna is NOT identical, at least not to me, an anatomy nerd. The former is leaner, have very aesthetic god-like features and a more narrow face, while the latter is just HUGE (basically true-form-size/proportions with no extra limbs).

This is where I take a break from writing this post. I realised that it would be better to explain my dilemma with illustrations but I need a bit of time for that...

Extra comments: what's going on?!

First of all, I applaud the Master for this plot twist. This explains the hair color, doesn't it? And here I thought it was weird and desperately tried to draw Sukuna with a slightly different hair color... believing the similarity was only thanks the to medium the author used for coloring certain pages.

Second: I don't know how I didn't see the twin thing coming. I did a lot of digging on the mythological Ryomen Sukuna and the parallels are crazy, no matter how much Master Akutami tries to deny it. I don't speak Japanese, but as much as I take from the translated Japanese Wikipedia page (and other articles and posts), it is possible that the "real" Sukuna was either in fact conjoined twins, or a symbolic representation of a pair of twins, if memory serves.

Comments

😳😳😳 Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It looks like most people (everyone, including me) prefers the larger version, so I'll keep him around for sure. I think the best is to just add another "flavour" to my repertoire, for special cases. :3

I prefer the right one where he just looks HUGE but I love how you draw him tho, you’re literally my favourite Sukuna artist. But I totally get your point that maybe he would be leaner without the twin absorbing thing? Anyways you always draw him looking so beautiful and perfect whatever you draw will be perfect πŸ’–
