PROCESS VIDEO // deer studies

I had hoped to post this a lot earlier, but for some reason my computer was having a really rough time rendering this process video! You guys voted for more real-time drawing videos and as a result, this one is over two hours long. For some reason that led to Premiere crashing constantly. BUT! I worked it out, so here it finally is: the full real-time process for the deer studies! If you find it too slow, you can speed it up in the player controls! Just click on the little gear button and adjust the speed.

About the references: I have the reference images, which I pulled from google, open on a separate window next to my photoshop window. You can see that I keep the size quite small. The reason for this is because I just want to get the overall shape and movement right! If I focus too much on the details, I get lost in them. So my general approach is to keep the reference images small / zoomed out, and only zoom in at a later point to work out the specific details. Because these are studies, it’s more about overall shape and movement!

Here is the original post with the final deer art: https://www.patreon.com/posts/early-access-36492348

Here is an overview of which brushes I use, for this one I used Macalabs HB for the sketches and the hard round brush to paint details at the end: https://www.patreon.com/posts/step-by-step-i-34615265

And here is a step-by-step explaining the process, in which I mainly use lasso tool to block in colors and add some shading: https://www.patreon.com/posts/step-by-step-36570445

Hope you enjoy! Let me know if you have any questions!

Lois, you should try PureRef. It’s a free app for using references while drawing/studying. It’s super minimalistic and ‘cause it’s always on top, you can use PS in fullscreen 😆
