Major Scale in Three Must Know Positions!

Hello friends,

and welcome to another Weekly Challenge! In today’s session we will expand our ability to solo over major keys by learning three useful positions of our major scale, shown here in the key of C. Maximize your practice time by reciting the note names and scale intervals as you drill each position. Let’s get started!

Major Scale in Three Must Know Positions!

Hi Rob, new here. Great lesson. I have a question about the scales. Can those scale positions be played in any key? For example, if you moved up a half step on the 6th string root "C'' up to to "D'', would the ''shapes'' be just the same, but your major scale would then be in ''D''?

I’m about to age myself with this one Rob. I think the idea to sing the letters, on tone, with the notes is great. My problem- I can’t stop singing “Do, Ra, Me, Fa, So, La, Te, Do” instead of C, D, E, F, G, A, B C 😂

That staircase lesson was tremendous! Now I finally feel that I have a basis for learning licks. This was just what I needed, so many thanks for connecting me to this lesson. Starting to learn this is the order of the day!

Glad you’re enjoying it Gary! This is a big part of my playing, having these positions down really provides me with extra awareness and the ability to flow about the fretboard. Have fun!

Thanks Dawn! It’s all about building a repertoire of licks. I have my “bread and butter” that I frequently go to, it’s not as spectacular as it may seem. Just pick a few ideas and drill them into your muscle memory. That first lick was broken down in the channel, I call it the “staircase.”

Great Lesson Rob !!

Great stuff, Rob. I learn something new each time. I just wish I was more able to convert these scales into the cool riffs that you demonstrate. I don't know if I'm just too timid or that I don't know how to feel it. At any rate, practice is king. Who knew scales could be so funky!
