I have no specific knowledge of this idea, and she was well before the Renaissance, but this sounds suspiciously like something Hildegard von Bingen might have come up with.

I'm struggling to find it, but there was a nun in the Renaissance who postulated that as God is infinite, so too must be creation, and this in universe must be populated in an infinite diversity of people's, creatures, cultures, and worlds. I'll be damned if I can find out who that was.
