This show is really sad, but I'm also really grateful it exists because it dramatizes historical events I didn't know much about. Most Americans are familiar with the red scare (the crackdown on suspected communists led by Joseph McCarthy) and the Hollywood blacklist, but the lavender scare (the crackdown on suspected queer people) only got one line in my history textbook, lumped in with the red scare. Seeing what that would have looked like, even though fictional characters like Mary and Caroline, was long overdue for me
