A Strange Miracle - The Disappearance Of Gia Fuda

How did I miss this one?

Now *this* is a weird one. Thankfully Gia was found alive and unhurt, but there are so many questions! I'm assuming that, privately, Gia and her family have discussed concerns about mental health. I'm surprised that the officials in the after action report didn't make (officially atleast) more of a push to discuss it. I'm glad that it was just an accident, and that she wasn't suicidal, but that isn't really sufficient to explain what happened. They brushed it off by saying that she "simply got lost", but that's masking the obvious questions. A hiker that loses the trail is "simply lost"; but a person who just wanders into the woods without any rhyme or reason is not "simply lost" because it's more complicated than that. Gia herself seemed to brush it off by saying that she was "at a low point", or that her behavior at the coffee stand was "A little bizarre", what does that even mean? Did she only intend of walking for a few minutes? And what's the deal with her explanation that she was looking for a bridge? Perhaps this has all been dealt with privately. Afterall, Gia and her family are under no obligation to discuss such a sensitive topic publicly. But it feels like a missed opportunity to discuss mental health as it relates to missing people. Positive outcomes like this are so rare that I feel like this would have been a great opportunity to potentially learn things about future cases. But it seems like everyone was happy to button it up and move on.

I love your deep dives into these cases. It really sheds light on them and helps people better understand what happened or could have happened. I think there are some strange missing persons cases out there that might have an unknown element to them, but I also suspect that there are many that are placed in that category that have mundane explanations, like this one (not that mental health isn't important, but it's something that's explainable through conventional means). Thanks for all the research you do and it was interesting to get to see the location as well.

Outstanding analysis. Seems to me that maybe she was headed to see the young man until he called her off. This may have sent her into a bit of a tailspin ending in her erratic behavior. Lucky to be alive. Great work Nick.
