A personal message to the hivemind ❤️

Hellooooo, hivemind!

As some of you may have seen from our recent YouTube community post, we’ve started a second channel called deeplizard vlog! As mentioned in that post, over the last few months, we’ve adopted a nomadic lifestyle and have been living throughout South East Asia. On deeplizard vlog, we’ve shared some of our experiences so far. The video linked to this post is one example!

So... why did we decide to do this?

As you may have noticed from our style on deeplizard, we’ve historically been pretty private people by not showing who we are and not even sharing our names. Well, in the spirit of aiming to be true polymaths, we decided to push ourselves completely out of our comfort zones by venturing outside of the U.S. (which we’ve never done before), learning how to film, learning how to produce new content, and becoming more open and social while doing so... Oh, and doing this all on camera!

We also wanted to lead by example by showing how someone can be a researcher, a mathematician, a programmer, or [insert any other profession here], and not have to fit inside the box of whatever that may typically look like. We thought that sharing another side of ourselves could be beneficial in spreading this message as we continue our mission to build collective intelligence through deeplizard.

So, let us formally introduce ourselves by name to you for the first time. We are Chris and Mandy. If you’re following our most recent content on deeplizard, you may know Chris from the PyTorch series, and you may know Mandy from the reinforcement learning series. We’re really excited to share experiences and conversations with you in a new way.

If you’re interested in connecting with us outside of original deeplizard content, head over to deeplizard vlog and subscribe! Otherwise, we’ll still be continuing to make deeplizard content in the way we always have on our original channel :)

Thank you all for being part of the hivemind, and we hope to hear from you!

Thanks so much Garret! Really glad to have you here! Looking forward to those prominent positions 🤖

Just joined. I've been watching your video content for a week now. Your content is amazing and you definitely deserve this at least and of course you will both be given prominent positions when my robot army takes over the Earth. LoL. Oh, and my name on YT is Azael Burr the character in a story I was writing. Hah. Thanks again guys!!!

Hey Tom, welcome! Thanks so much for joining the hivemind! 😊

Hello, and I'm glad that I found this. So great to see this community and I'm just exploring it. Just going though classes, tutorials, etc on Pytorch. Much more to say and ask but I just wanted to say hi. Also, you two look like you are having the time of your lives!

I’m glad to be here! Thanks Chris and Mandy!

You're so welcome, Javi! Happy to hear that you're enjoying it!

Hi Chris and Mandy! I just wanted to thank you for your great content. I have learned a lot from your PyTorch series and wanted to support you. I personally love that I have also learned about python on the way! The refactoring video was amazing.

I think I'll stick with what I've sent. The hooks don't work as well as I hoped in the case. I wasn't really adding hooks, I just wanted to breakout the processing done for each convolution layer along with the relu and max pool operations so I could call them individually at the end of each epoch.

Cool - I'll have to explore this more. The functions I added were my first thought on how to do forward passes through the convolution filters alone. However, I see howthe hooks can be used and that way I don't have to muck up the network class code. Nice separation of code. Take a look if you want, I'll modify the code to use hooks and send you an update. Thanks for the feedback and helping me learn even more.

Thank you, David!

So nice to say hello to you Chris and Mandy. Thanks again for deeplizard the new deeplizard vlog Best wishes for safe travels and great experiences!
