Spider-Man 3 (Full Reaction)

Hello everyone!! Here is the full reaction to the last of the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies! This was such an awesome film. When I started watching it, I had assumed I had seen it before. Turns out, I had not! That made this film so much more exciting!

This felt like a really wonderful ending to Peter Parker's story. There were also some cool unexpected characters that popped up like Sandman and Venom. I'm not too familiar with Venom, but I know there is a movie with that name. Also, Peter's relationship with Harry was everything that I could have hoped for.

Next up, The Amazing Spiderman!!

Hope you enjoy this!

This is far more of an accurate depiction of Venom than the version in the Venom movies. People like those movies for what they are but it's really not Venom at all.

Cameron

I think two movies would have been better, with the scene at the clocktower and Eddie become Venom as the ending of the first movie.

First time seeing this movie since it came out. And it’s still just as bad as I remember. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

I'm realizing now that honestly, this is a bold movie. Pardon my French, but Peter is a real asshole for most of this movie. Even before the symbiote bonded to him, he was very arrogant. He wasn't really there for Mary Jane, and he was very full of himself. Fans have always hated the dance scene, but it's really bold because it ends with him breaking 2 girl's hearts. I wish Gwen had more to do in the movie, but Bryace Dallas Howard really did a lot with what she had to do. This movie gets a lot of flack, and while it does have problems, particularly with pacing and plotting with villains being around for a while, then disappearing and with rushing the Venom character, but I remember seeing this in theaters and the audience audibly gasped at this movie 3 separate times, when Peter nearly lost the ring, when Harry and Mary Jane kissed, and when Peter hit Mary Jane. In my book, any movie that gets that much of an emotional reaction from its audience is doing something right. It is the weakest of the trilogy, but I think it's still good. Also, the birth of Sandman scene is still amazing to this day. I thought this back in 2007 and I still think it to this day that if you take that scene out of the movie and make it a short film, that is winning awards. It's that impressive!

This movie has some pretty interesting history behind it. It set an opening weekend record at the box office and was the highest grossing movie in the Raimi trilogy. But the critical reception was mixed, with many arguing that the inclusion of too many villains bloated the movie. Sony forced Raimi to include Venom in the movie, who was a very popular villain from the comics and the 90's cartoon show. During the development of Spider-Man 4, Raimi continued to have creative differences with the studio and ultimately dropped out, leading to Sony deciding to reboot the series with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. Personally I like this movie a lot! It may not be quite as good as Spider-Man 2, but that was a tough act to follow. Thomas Haden Church has been one of my favorite actors ever since I saw him in Sideways with Paul Giamatti. He gives a great performance and I can see why Raimi would've wanted more of the focus to be on his arc.

Mike Smith

I'm a sucker for the Venom movies, they're just pure fun, and Tom Hardy makes sure you know it was a lot of fun. He pours his heart and soul into it as the main producer and helps with the story and does the Venom voice himself (so essentially acts with himself), it's so awesome! The soundtrack is also fantastic, I highly recommend!

He kissed Gwen Stacey with Mary Jane's special kiss which was the thing that really dug into Mary Jane's heart. Evil (Spider-Man) Tobey McGuire is known as Bully McGuire in all the memes out there. The way everyone is going after "Mary Jane" in all three Spider-Man movies you'd think it wasn't legal in so many states in the US and all of Canada, lol...

Stan Johnston

That makes sense that the studio fought to add Venom. They could have made two movies out of this story since the plot was so intricate. I was wondering why they packed so much content into this film. Thanks for sharing the backstory on this film and how it relates to the comics and the 90s animated series!

Spider-Man 3 is a fun, over-the-top movie that I can’t help but enjoy for its sheer silliness, especially the “Bully Maguire” scenes, which have become meme gold. It’s often criticized by most people, but over the years, fans have come to appreciate it more. Kind of like the Star Wars Prequels. Sam Raimi originally didn’t want Venom in the movie. He wanted to focus on Harry’s Goblin arc and Sandman, but studio interference messed with his plans. Raimi himself admitted that producer Avi Arad pressured him to include Venom, leading to the film’s biggest flaws, too many character plot-lines. Also, Venom was only introduced in 1988 so Rami never grew up with the character and thus didn't know much about Venom. Instead he wanted to focus on more classic villains introduced during the '60s. Despite the mixed reviews, the movie actually crushed it at the box office, outperforming the first two films on it's opening gross, becoming the highest opening for a Spider-Man film... Well until Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) blew it out of the water. After Spider-Man 3, plans for Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 fell apart due to the fallout behind the scenes. Raimi had big ideas for the next movie, including Bruce Campbell as Mysterio in a comedic montage featuring other lesser known villains, with a comic-accurate Vulture as the main threat. He also planned to film Spider-Man 5 as well, back to back with The Lizard I believe, but when Sony decided to reboot the franchise, Raimi left the project. This led to The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and its sequel in 2014, with Andrew Garfield stepping into the role. Unfortunately, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 didn’t hit the mark financially or critically, and Sony ended up making a deal with Marvel Studios to bring Spider-Man into the MCU, which we you saw in Captain America: Civil War (2016). That’s how we got Tom Holland’s version, leaving Garfield as the only modern live-action Spider-Man without a trilogy. Moving back to Spider-Man 3. Sandman’s portrayal was spot-on and one of the film’s highlights, but his arc got overshadowed by all the Venom drama. Gwen Stacy was more of a side character, though her appearance was a nice nod to her comic roots as Peter’s first major relationship. Technically, Betty Brant was Peter’s first girlfriend in the comics during High School, but Gwen is widely regarded as his first real love who he met during College, around the same time MJ was introduced. The way the symbiote just randomly shows up in the movie feels super rushed, since the film was already packed with story plot-lines. In the comics, Peter first got the symbiote during the '80s Secret Wars crossover event on Battleworld, later returning back to Earth wearing the iconic black suit. The '90s animated series had a version in which the symbiote arrived to Earth onboard a NASA shuttle piloted by John Jonah Jameson III that crashed in New York City. The scene where Peter uses the church bell to remove the symbiote, with Eddie below, is straight out of the comics. Having Peter go to Dr. Connors for advice mirrors the '90s animated series in which he visits Connors to look into the symbiote. Though in the comics, Peter actually turned to Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four. The moment where Peter wakes up on a skyscraper and sees his reflection in the black suit is another nod to the '90s series. That show also introduced the idea of the symbiote messing with Peter’s personality, which the movie leaned into. Prior to the '90s Animated Series the black suit did not change the personality of the host. But overall I do really enjoy this film. Far from perfect but I had a blast and glad you enjoyed it.
