On Non-Human People

Another project on critiquing critics I've been thinking about discussing non-human peoples "otherness". I might consider another "criticism of criticism" video for a 200,000 sub special if we ever get there.  🤞

On Non-Human People

Comments

to boil it down, "LGBT-ness" should not be shown as an emergent property of non-humanity.

Maxwell Black

That was interesting, and I enjoyed the thoughts.

here's my trans widdle take on the nonhumans thing: the argument is less 'making your lesbian a vampire is bad because vampires are the other' and more 'making your only nonbinary characters aliens who dont have genitals anyway unintentionally re-enforces the idea that cisnormativity is inherently human and only nonhumans can evolve outside of that role' its the same issue i had with double trouble, undoubtedly a person, but only nonbinary because they could physically shift genders with the unintended caveat that if they COULDNT do that they'd just be cis. im not saying this is the intention of these creators, but my own discomfort with the trope comes from the fact that artists feel the need to invent alien biology to include a type of person who occurs naturally as a human

I had not seen the Queen Maeve angle coming. Not by a long shot. A welcome one, though. A full video would be rad.

Niels Overgaard

Yes to full video!!! There is such an important distinction between "monster" and "character." It's much more nuanced than "is the LGBTQ+ character a bipedal descendant of a common ancestor with x and y biological traits". What criticism should be focused on is whether the LGBTQ+ character is fully actualized, if they have motivations and flaws and if they are an agent in the story, and if that agency is positively portrayed/utilized well. Does that makes sense? Agency of characters is way more important to me than what kind of alien biology a character has. Because you're right! Aliens are cool! Monsters are cool, I'll say it. What's not cool is when the aliens/monsters/whatever don't have agency or motivation or characterization, and that's certainly not what's going on with Steven Universe or Adventure Time.

I'd definitely like to see a full video on the subject, you consistently produce masterful work!

More please!!!

Yes please, anything from you. I love your voice, And your writing style

I liked this a lot. I'm a fan of Lilly's but I do think she goes too far sometimes and has an all or nothing approach to things that makes her arguments less effective than they could be. I also liked that you addressed everything I was writing in my response comment, so kudos. I'd love to see more videos about criticism from you. Hell, your first video about that was really good. I don't even know who like 90% of the people mentioned in that video are but you still made a lot of good points and I enjoyed it a lot.

Max Dweck

I’d totally watch a full video like this! Criticism about criticism is way interesting, something I didn’t know I needed
