Force of Nature P139

Well, here it is. The end of chapter 2. Thank you, guys, for making this all possible! Of course, there will be a chapter 3 (and 4 most likely). But I will take a little break between them. A lot of chapter three is still in the air. I'm not one of those people who can write a book on a napkin while on a train ride. There are important plot points I have down and characters that will reappear and get their time in the spotlight, but it's all still a bit fuzzy. So while I'm working that out, here are my plans for the future (and like next week):

My biggest goal is to one day be able to go to conventions and sell physical things, specifically my comics and maybe things like stickers or other stuff relating to them. Meeting people and getting more in touch with the community.

And I've done my first tiny baby step already. I applied for a really new and small local con. Not furry friendly or NSFW, so I have to make some stuff I can present and sell there. So I've gotten into the whole "small business" thing. In preparation for that, I opened up an Etsy store. There aren't many products on it yet BUT, I've got confirmation that my NEW STICKERS for Force of Nature will arrive tomorrow. So hopefully that's true. I've added a little pic to this post so you can take a look.

These ones will be available to purchase on my Etsy, you can even add tracking this time. I will make a new post, as soon as I get them. They are a bit smaller than the Patreon stickers and are on a soft-touch clear vinyl. I think they look very cute. But let me know your thoughts.

Anyways, big ramble here. And it's not even over yet.

Like I wanted to say, next week I will start a new comic. One that will be only one issue long and be more focused on NSFW things rather than story. I just want to try and start a project and be as consistent as possible so I can make a good-looking printed version of it. Force of Nature is my baby, but... let's face it, it's definitely grown with me in terms of art. It's not perfect at all, but seeing some old pages next to new ones... uff. So yeah, I just wanted to start a new comic and try to make it nice. I'm still going back to Force of Nature once that new comic is finished, but I need a new challenge/project to try and improve.

You will see more next week!
P.s: How did you like chapter 2? Feel free to give honest feedback.

Love your work. Keep going 🥰

Bro, you literally don't understand flawed characters. You seem more insufferable to talk to than the fictional character you're berating even. Sorry you are an actual empty husk who can't understand an actual redemption with character writing that isn't bad vs good guy.

Fryx could have told Freya no at any point. He made a halfhearted attempt to prevent the mating - but didn't do the one obvious thing that would have prevented the whole mess, walking away. He knew what he was doing was wrong and he knew why. A recovering alcoholic who sits down in a bar and waits until his temptation drives him to drink isn't actually trying to recover. Similarly, he only had to provide the minimum possible care for Freya because he let her go with him, risking her life and their children. No one forced him to accept. Not abandoning her after that and providing shade after she literally collapsed from abuse and overwork is the bare minimum possible care, so I guess he gets the mimum possible points for compassion...if they still count after you helped put them in that situation. I don't think so. Regardless of if you mean it, telling your child to go die and verbally abusing your mate is classic abusive behavior. Your own emotional trauma may help explain it, but it doesn't excuse it. Many people have lost family without taking it out on the rest of their family. Cheating on someone in front of them so you can have a sick, twisted fantasy about actually having sex with your dead mate isn't a point for him, by the way, nor is self-hatred, and nor is crying when you murder an innocent in cold blood. For him to even meet the slightest shreds of redeemability, he needs to sacrifice something. As of now, his selfishness and abusiveness have largely imposed costs on others; the only thing he's lost is his place in the tribe, and that was a direct consequence of his actions, not a sacrifice. The entire second chapter has been about him hurting and killing almost everyone around him; if he wants to come back from this in any satisfying way, it had better hurt. Realistically, I think the author has dug themselves into too deep of a hole. Fryx is practically a black hole of narcissism and abuse, incapable of seeing anyone else's problems until they've been rubbed in his face for an extended period. It's going to take a very long time to build a story that resolves this in any satisfying way, and I already don't care enough about Fryx to want to read another chapter focused on him.

Thing is, he never attempted to abandon Freya during those 40+ days in the desert, even being willing to use his own body as shade for her to rest in. When Freya went into labor, he stayed to comfort her all the way until her dying breath. Back when he told Ain to go and starve, it was obvious to me that he never really meant it-- heck, he even spent the whole night hunting in that barren wasteland because he had no idea what he could do to make sure that didn't happen! This was despite not knowing at all what to do with a hungry kit, right after freaking BURYING the one he loved who he watched die in front of his own eyes. After all this, he had to let his little one (literally their only surviving kit!) get taken away to who-knows-where frozen north to give him the slightest hope for living, and there was nothing he could do about it. His one mistake was being unable to stop his instincts for that one moment in time, when his friend and lover was in heat and pressing him as hard as possible. It was Freya's own choice to join him in exile, and Fryx had reasonable intentions in getting them both through the desert as fast as possible. The desert killed Freya, not him, and yet he blames himself entirely for it. Fryx IS remorseful about what happened, all the way to the point of literally hating himself. He literally refers to Ain as "Freya's son". Not theirs, but hers. He refuses to even give himself the credit. He had sex with Fara not because he wanted to hurt the princess' feelings or sabotage political relations, but because he was depressed and seeking some sort of comfort. For those few moments, he could allow himself to imagine that Fara was Freya, and indulge in a fantasy that could never happen in his waking reality. I understand that first impressions are everything. I agree that Fryx can be abrasive, selfish, snarky, self-centered, not to mention dumb as rocks when it comes to interacting with others. All of that is true. But even during the moment he killed/incapacitated Nugg, there were tears in his eyes. He might not have even wanted to do it, but if it was the only way he could find Ain again, he was willing to. I believe Fryx is still redeemable. It's still too early in the story for a climactic redemption a la Vader or Snape but I think it can happen.

spritelobster

He's not self-centered, he's an out-of-control abusive asshole who berated his mate until she died and told his son to die, as well as attacking and possibly killing someone innocent. He never helps anyone out, never shows any kindness, and doesn't say anything except to insult and abuse. He doesn't deserve a redemption arc, and it's almost beyond imagination how he could even begin to redeem himself. Yes, I want him to die and get out of the story already. This isn't edginess, this is me genuinely despising the character and wanting the story to focus on literally anyone else. If you want to redeem a character, you need to give them some redeeming qualities. Snape actually protected Harry, despite his many flaws, and Vader died trying to protect his son. Fryx has shown no willingness to sacrifice anything at all for anyone. He can't even have sex without deliberately hurting his partners out of impatience.

Heorge Heorgiana

Bro can't handle a self-centered character, and instead of wanting a redemption or change in perspective for the character, you just want them to die? As if no great or just potentially morally good fictional characters started this way. He's been given not much reason to be better, I'm waiting to see him gain redemption. Take your edgy unforgiving murder takes somewhere else.

Loved Chapter 2! I’m looking forward to whatever comes next :)) There’s a lot of ways you could take the story from here, so I’m glad to see you’re taking your time to think it through first. Admittedly I found the flitting between present and flashback to a little hard to follow at first, so in case you outline for it try and keep it to a single block if possible. Overall, a great worldbuilding chapter for sure! Only thing I wished there was more of was cute Fryx/Freya interactions pre-incident :3

spritelobster

The problem is that those "redeeming moments" only come after extended emotional abuse, and are usually laced with caveats. His rant to Nyx only came because she kept prying at his emotional wounds. Given his general assholishness, I doubt he'd have said anything if she had only briefly mentioned it. Same thing with him finally helping Freya - he was an abusive asshole to her right up until she collapsed. Is he a victim of circumstance? Maybe. Depends on how much instincts drive animals in this comic. Does he continue deliberately harming people at every chance he gets? Yes. Does he deserve sympathy in my book? No.

Heorge Heorgiana

Interesting take :/ I still hold that Fryx was very much a victim of circumstance, a naturally grumpy fennec whose life ended up turned upside down by an unfortunate romp with the vixen he liked (who was the one forced herself on him btw). The way I read his character shows redeeming moments despite the stress he’s under (his motivational speech for Nix, for example) and despite his innate selfishness. He’s really just an inexperienced loner who wants to see the last remaining memory of what he and Freya used to be (and what he was never able to tell her while she was alive) by ANY means necessary.

spritelobster

I have no sympathy for Fryx. He's hurt the innocent over and over again with no signs of remorse. The only possibly selfless motive he has is finding his son, but that is probably about him too. If you're trying to make someone morally complex, you need to actually give them some sort of good side. Right now, I just want him to die and get out of the story already.

Heorge Heorgiana

I look forward to what's next in the story :) you're doing an incredible job
