German-Canadian here; both sides of my family love liquorice, though only the german half go for the salted stuff (i’ll eat it but it’s not my favourite: liquorice cigars for the win)

I only know of Salmiakki from the Daily WTF and as you might imagine from that, I'm probably more likely to eat the car tire. And yet it's one of the least bad delicacies in the area. I mean, just read the other things one might eat in Iceland: https://www.biteoficeland.com/rotten-shark/

For me regular red licorice is ok, twizzlers are a definite no though.

Black licorice, anise and cloves are big with heavy smokers; it's one of the few things they can still taste.

There are people that chew on dried cloves. These are the same people that eat black licorice. Now, red Vines licorice, or licorice whips at the theater when I was a kid, those you better gimme.
