The fact that this happened so early in the series blew my mind, and completely changed the tone of everything that came after it. But I love the risky choice and it definitely pays off for them!
They handle this scene with so much care and attention that it works in the series' favor. I especially appreciate the intense character work they do this episode for Simon. It really propels his character forward in a way nothing else could. And the entire cast never really recovers from it, which is saying something about how well-written and likeable this character was.
