Children of Doom 1999

Finally! The full Children of Doom 1999 draft is here. I still need to do a proper editing pass - make sure audio levels are okay, look for spelling errors, do some extremely minor edits, and make sure things are all copacetic - so this is probably not the final final video. But it's more or less "complete" in the sense that it's got all the content I intended to cover.

Looking forward to tackling some smaller projects again after this!

Was kind of hoping No One Lives Forever would get the 2000 nod, but hard to complete with Deus Ex. Hope it gets a mention though.

The take on Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament misses for me a couple of key items. First is that this was the peak of the single-player bots brought about by Quake's modding scene. While Unreal Tournament would develop its bots further in future editions, they would fall out of fashion in FPSs as broadband became the norm. Second is that Unreal Tournament marks a key shift in the FPS market towards team games over deathmatch, also represented by the success Counterstrike was going to garner during its beta this year. Quake 3 would be seen as almost dated in its approach, responding with Quake 3 Team Arena (Q3TA) the following year. Unreal Tournament was also one of the first games to do what we'd now call "free DLC" with a sizeable release of new maps for all its mods, prior to the release of Q3TA. It's an early example, though not the first, with Total Annihilation's unit releases being the earliest one that I recall.

love the video... only note I have is that maybe it would be cool to have a bumper to "officially" end the system shock segment to segue into the other 1999 games. Feel like the past children of doom videos had some sort of demarcation point between the main subject and everything else happening in that year

Excite!

So happy to see new videos from you, Chris!

Seeing the video, I thought the homeless murdering sidequest in Kingpin must have been a shogo-esque joke where you can skip it by killing the questgiver, but no. They take your weapons away and you can't scream enough obscenities at the landlord to get him to attack you. Wild. I feel like there's a thinkpiece waiting to be written comparing the more outwardly problematic build engine shooters (Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior) with games like SWAT 3 and Kingpin. I think the games (and other media) which embrace a Fascist/Nihilistic worldview while carefully avoiding being clearly offensive have the potential to do a lot of harm.

If I had one suggestion, it would be to drop the "narsissistic mother" bit? There has been a huge fad of equating narcissistic personality disorder with self-serving abuse in the past few years, and that makes things much harder for NPD folks just trying to survive. Mental health stigma is a real problem, and it kinda poisoned the well on Narcissus references.

I am *losing* it over the ending - that was so well done!

whoa... I definitely played the Requiem: Avenging Angel demo in high school and then forgot its existence until this video. that was a bizarre feeling.
