Base in the works
Added 2023-02-08 21:57:09 +0000 UTCMy friends, thanks again for all of your positive and supportive comments! I started working on a scenic base for the Karl, and it's gonna be a simple one. But that doesn't mean it's not going to be absolutely MASSIVE! :D
One picture of the real mortar caught my eye, and it seems like a small hill was built in order to provide a stable firing position for it. I found a completely unrelated photo of that modern AMX thing sitting on similar terrain, and you can see there how soft ground behaves. Both of these pictures are at the end of the gallery.
Basically, the ground had to be leveled before the mortar could sit down and get ready for action. There's a report from some German officer talking about how much manpower it will require, and how long it will take. How they'll have to work during the night so the enemy reconnaissance aircraft won't see them, etc. So that's what I'm aiming for here. Leveled ground, soft, yet dry. I'll try to add as much texture as possible tomorrow. Earth clumps of various sizes, some stones, maybe a few tufts of grass, and maybe something extra... we'll see.
Also, I went for an oval base because a rectangle seemed a bit boring. Because of that, I had to cut and glue the longest piece of veneer ever! Fortunately, I bought a large sheet in advance. I often get questions about the veneer, and where I buy it, so if it's gonna be any help to you, I get it from a Czech store called MN-Modelar. They have the page in English as well, so it seems they're sending packages to other countries.
I found two figures from Panzer Art that might fit this model pretty well, but I'll look around online if I won't find something more suitable.
