You mentioned that the story could be made into a play - well, you're totally right, there was a play by the same name that came out in 1977, three years before the film came out. Dr. Treves was played by Sir Anthony Hopkins (Hannibal Lecter from The Silence of the Lambs and Odin from Thor). Sir John Hurt (R.I.P.) (Mr. Ollivander from Harry Potter) played John Merrick. Fantastic actors, both of them! A lot of credit also goes to Christopher Tucker, the makeup artist. The film was nominated for eight Oscars, but didn't win any (criminal, IMO). The scene where he talks about being a disappointment to his mother, the scene where he finally stands up for himself ("I am not an animal! I am a human being!"), and the scene where he says to Treves, "My friend, I am happy every hour of the day. My life is full, because I know that I am loved. I have gained myself. I could not say that, were it not for you" are some of the most difficult scenes for me to watch without losing it. (My mother rejects my sexuality and I constantly feel like I am a disappointment to her. I'm working with my therapist on standing up for myself.)
