Aylia's Story Alpha 0.01

Good Morning!

I guess an explanation is in order. I'm not going to write a long winded, excuse filled post. Things happened that slowed progress, I procrastinated, I wasted time re-editing and re-fixing things, whatever. It all ends up the same. If you've never tried to write a story, draw a picture, even code a program, it may be hard to understand, but your creative endeavor is NEVER done, never. I could go through the prologue right now and start making changes, because you can always make it "better." In fact, I've probably rewritten the prologue no less than 50 times. An experienced developer probably knows how to move on, to ignore mistakes, to get a product released. You're stuck with a learning amateur.

Here's what's going to happen. A good portion of the game is ready to go, but it needs to be input into RPG Maker, which takes a surprising amount of time due to the less than ideal interface for dialogue work, eventing, etc. I'm going to start releasing the beta, with the advise that you don't play every single iteration. It's your call, but I'd use the beta as proof that the game is progressing and we're nearing the finish line. I've tried to post a few images and game concepts along the way, but people want to see something playable. I don't blame them, as it has been two freakin' years. So, I'll be uploading increasing increments of the game throughout the month. It could be daily, it could be every 2-3 days. These will be small increments as I move completed images, written dialogue, etc. to RPG Maker. I'll keep a running changelog, and give you an idea of what to expect, so you know whether it's worth the 80mb download and your time.

This first version is not worth your time, and probably won't be until Friday. So, download it if you wish, pick it apart (all 15 minutes of it), your call. I'll have the full prologue input with all the new tweaks by Thursday, and then start putting chapter 1 the rest of the way in. Still, if you want proof that I'm working, you can download it and see that things have changed quite a bit.

(You probably have to manually copy/paste the link to get it to work)

Changelog version 0.01:

Game ends after the intro sequence because I reworked my faceset labeling when the sprites came in. Meaning, the game will crash when it tries to pull Bogwort's faces. I could rename the file, but there's no point since I've not input the final stuff beyond that anyways.

Version 0.02 will be uploaded Thursday:

Should contain the entire prologue with all the new artwork and events. All I'm doing tomorrow and Thursday is inputting stuff into RPG Maker.

I'll be creating a YTGaming Discord later this week. I'll be on the discord most days while I'm working. You can pop in and chat real time, relay concerns, etc. This also should help me keep on task, since it's easy to procrastinate when I'm my own boss I'm finding out.

Finally, I can't stop you, but I'd appreciate if you didn't share the beta beyond Patreon. First, there is literally no point sharing 0.01. The only reason to play it is to see that things are changing. Second, I do plan on releasing things publicly when they are ready. If you want to see this endeavor succeed, it really helps for public releases to be polished.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Give me a bit more time. The only crutch I have to prop myself up after all my failed promises is that I'm not charging you monthly. It is also the reason I often let myself get distracted and procrastinate (Yes, my love of video games is a detriment), for what's it's worth. I neutralize the behavior by saying, "Well, I'm not charging them, so what's a few more days." Days turn into weeks quickly. At least if I start doing quick, incremental releases. You can choose to play or not, I'd recommend waiting, but it'll keep me honest. Despite what you see here, there is a lot done. I've got a lot of artwork not input in RPG Maker, pretty much the entire chapter is written in Microsoft Word, I've got 2-3 chapters fleshed out in Labrynth, with a draft of the entire game. I've got sprites, animations, audio ready to go. I've got scripts in Notepad++ that need to be setup. So, It's not like I've wasted two years, I've just fiddled around a bit too much without putting the actual game together. I think you'll see that with the incremental releases, in that it would be impossible to get them done in a few days if this stuff was not ready to go in outside programs.

Thank you for your patience, see you at the finish line

Aylia's Story Alpha 0.01

Comments

i cant download from Mega!

So it's Thursday... 7:33 Pacific time. Where's v 0.02? Also, did I read that right? You weren't actually working in RPGMaker until just recently when you started putting stuff into it? So the reason we haven't had any playable test bits, updates, micro releases, or even screenshot teasers to really showcase the battle system, maps, or events in chapter 1 is because they weren't even in RPGMaker? Hoo boy... Good luck Yummy at getting chapter 1 out for May.

ArdenW

where is the v 0.02?

Will we be seeing the turtle finish his 8-month (?) journey? Or did Bogwart turn him into soup somewhere along the way...

raska42

little error: aylia have red panties in some scene (after the mine, when she recall her past/elder) and after it's white.

Well that was neat little preview. I have to sadly agree that I liked the prior artwork for Bogwort's face as well.

As much as I want to dive right in, I shall wait for the better chunk of the game's prologue and then some to be released. Should be a good way to blow off steam this weekend. Really looking forward to seeing the godly butt of Aylia in all its glory.

Karmaldia

You have a mole just to let you know your game is being shared. Congrats on being almost done your hard work will pay off and make us all happy lol

Imho, I thought the old Bogwort's face was better.

Nine Horse Hitch

The song only plays for one loop after the start of game.

Nine Horse Hitch

that's going to be in tomorrows up date. Read what YT wrote.

Nine Horse Hitch

Keep getting Graphics/Faces/BogwortFaceSetUpdated error

nozero

Congratulations on overcoming the desire to not release anything until it was perfect :) Taking a sneaky peek past the mine, there's a similar faceset issue with it missing "Graphics/Faces/MinorChar1" in the optional scene in the bone filled clearing in the Zalran Hills. (This happens again in Zalran, but that scene's mandatory, so guaranteed to be spotted when testing the version that updates that part). I like Aylia's new sprite, it's a lot cuter (it also makes the peasant dress look very low cut!). Aylia's apparently now a Pokemon trainer too (badges menu). Who knew? XD

Yummy, you sure know how to draw an elf butt. Please give it some proper love, or put in some enemies that I can constantly challenge that feel the same way as i do. Call them Phatties.

PhatsM

Keep going man. Nobody is here to see you fail. :)

Amptitude

When I finished Army Basic Training, there were guys chanting Marlboro as they crossed the finish line. I have faith that while it may be a bit, I'll be chanting Aylia, cheerfully. Cheers mate!

Darthjake

I agree with everything. Worst part is that if everything we're assuming from your post is true (we don't know it, but it sounds so), then you were quite...not completely honest with us, in the past.

MasterQi

I'll be a good boy and wait for Thursday

Hurray!!!!!! Glad to have sampled this -- can't wait for more. Good news indeed on the discord. You keep doin' you Yummy and keep chugging along.

also when Aylia is out of the crystal and talking to Bogwort there's a textline that repeats itself, "Still, she'd be a fool to think a goblin appearing the moment she's free is mere coincidence... No, the goblin has some role to play. With that in mind, Aylia takes a deep breath and tries a different tact. No, the goblin has some role to play. With that in mind, Aylia takes a deep breath and tries a different tact." Games crashes when interacting with the crystal remains from Aylia's prison Unable to find file: Graphics/Faces/BogwortFaceSetUpdated It was already reported but also happen when interacting with the mushrooms same thing before fighting the rats after checkin the files you have the new faceset as BogwortFaceSet.png unless you've got another one that wasn't added. Do we really need Aylia reminding us how itchy the potato sack is everytime we close the menu? Now I feel like an ass I was so blinded by the release I didn't realized you mentioned that you didn't added the new facesets so it would crash, I still managed to get to Zalran tho :p Edit 1: added some crash locations when doing ineractions Edit 2: added some comments Edit 3: added more comments P.S. it says it's a beta so I'm doing my best to find errors

Furanky

I can't believe it is finally hapenning <3

Furanky

The thing is, at this pace he will back to his old job cause there is no frigging way that he is gonna make chapter 2 for even this year, a whole year without income an a famiy? i dont think so

And I'm already used to it.

ArdenW

I dunno. I know you had been reworking the artwork and all, but I had somehow believed that you'd leave that cute widdle goblin's face alone.

ArdenW

Ugghhhh. A release of some sort and im not even able to be home to try it! The discord server is an EXCELLENT idea and i think a good motivator!! Something we've all wanted for a very long time!! Also please do charge when the full entirety of chapter 1 is released or at least put it to a poll. I think if you see that first fat stack of cash for a full chapter then it should make you want to finish the whole game with 125% effort and quality so you can keep raking it in. Your faithful have stuck around and when you release this sum'bitch more are bound to follow.

Blorken Shfeel

First, I'd like to say I appreciate your delay excuse this time. I'd much rather hear this than the other stuff you've put forward in the past (not saying it wasn't true, but it always seemed farfetched especially with the timing). Second, I'm assuming you're saying you aren't going to meet your May release plans. I said it before in my last post that I was expecting it, and so I'm not surprised or too perturbed, as it's just another facepalm among many. What concerns me most is the state of the game you're revealing to us. Maybe I read it wrong, but it sounds like a large portion of the game is floating around not even in RPG maker. Like, the entire script is in microsoft word, is that supposed to be a good thing? In June or July the next post will be, "well, you know, I'm an amateur, so I didn't expect it would take this long to put everything in RPG maker and make it work." Now we know why you couldn't release anything at all at the end of last year, because the game wasn't even in RPG maker yet! It was sitting in proof of concept in word files with everything else in pieces. This is the impression your post just gave me. I hope I'm wrong. I hope the state of your game is more than just a bunch of disjointed puzzle pieces that you are just now finally trying to get in RPG maker, because that is sure as hell what it sounds like. I wish you had told us the true state of the game before this. In all seriousness, Good Luck getting Ch. 1 out in 2017, because it certainly doesn't look like it'll be happening. It's saddening that you won't even be meeting a chapter 1 release in your 6 month full time "job interview" as you had called it -- this is something you said would happen 100%, and would consider anything less a failure. It's really late to be releasing broken pieces of your game at this point, but at the least it is something. Even though I'm expecting delays even on these small increments that you're trying to push forward, for some reason I foolishly still think that you'll someday release chapter 1.

Dumai12

There something that we can see. Yummy instead of constant update of your work go for weekly or biweekly once the prolong is running.

Nine Horse Hitch

I suppose I can begin the proofing process on the intro sequence, then? :P

This makes me feel better about procrastinating learning to program for Android. :D Speaking of Bogwort, there's a scene in the prologue where my thoughts synchronized with his: "Must keep her laughing." That kind of content is what really got me interested in Aylia's Story.

Maniac

Never had any doubt in my mind you were working on this solid YummyTiger, although I did warn you about release dates. It's good to set goals, don't get me wrong, but announcing them here isn't the wisest options. If you need someone to hold you accountable, to drive you forward, let it be friends or family. Also, keep in mind when you are mainly working on something alone, everything takes 2 times longer then you think it will. Mainly because if you get stuck, there is no one else to rely on beside yourself. Don't let this frustrate you though, and remember to space out your work with down time to relax. I'll be waiting for your next update, whether or not you have it up by next Thursday or even if it takes a bit longer.) Like I said before, Bayonetta PC just got released and there is a 'special' patch for it.) When you do get some R&R I highly recommend you check it out.

Having same issue ok missed that info... nevermind

When I try to take the first fungus, the crash game and the following message appears: "Unable to find file: Graphics / Faces / BogwortFaceSetUpdated"

Valornim

Thanks a lot Yummy :-) I know this might not be a popular opinion, but imo take all the time you need (and can afford to take) to make this as good as you want it to be. It is not like it is costing me/us any money only time waiting aka nothing at all. Don't get me wrong. I really, really want this game now, Heck I wanted it two years ago... but then again it is just a game (it will be an awesome one) but all it costs me is waiting time Sometimes I really miss Blizzard's old answer to realease date questions... "When it's done!" Anyway I understand this and the pressure you are under to release something. Just my two cents. Best wishes for you and your family Yummy. Keep up the good work :-)

TheNetsrac

Thanks Yummy ! It's nice to finally see something getting released. If i can give you some advices (learned the hard way as i'm a professionnal developer for big companies since long years now) : - Don't give estimated release date, and if you do, take some "time in case" in account, like 1 or 2 more weeks, consider that when you take a commitment it must be kept, - Always communicate, never play the silent one. If something goes wrong, just talk about it. Customers (in my case) always get angry if they learn about an issue when the deadline is near. You don't have to post an helluvah amount of text each time. In the last missed release date for example, you should have tell us : "i have some saves issue, you probably will get the trailer in 4 more days". It's easier to be patient when you know what is going on. - Work small part by small part, and don't go for the full thing at once. By doing so you won't be overloaded and you might be able to get something released easily. It's also easier to debug. Anyway good luck for the next release.

TheBob

Holy shit it's happening

Cory Carson

"I often let myself get distracted and procrastinate (...) Days turn into weeks quickly." - going full time didnt change much i guess... Also its not my business but isnt Aylia's Story supposed to be your main source of income now? Well, its May or never for Chapter 1.
