Game Progress Update

Hello everyone!

First, thank you all for your wonderful ideas in the outfit thread! It has been really exciting watching and seeing the level of creativity. I purposely did not comment much, because I wanted the discussion to come from you all. I think the community outfit is going to be popular in-game.

On to the game progress. About 3-4 months ago, I broke Chapter 1 into 3 primary segments. Had I chosen to go the more frequent, smaller update path, these chunks could have been three separate updates. You guys would have gotten more of the game quite awhile ago, but I think the game will be better in going the bigger update--even though it takes longer. So, with that in mind, here is my current status:

Segment #1: 95% Finished

Segment #2: 85% Finished

Segment #3: 50% Finished

What you can expect: 3 multi-stage main quests, 4 rival quests, 8+ side quests, loads of mini events/dialogue that changes dynamically, 10+ new maps, and sneakyness. It will take at least 3 plays to see everything (you can obviously save before big decisions to shorten that requirement. I'd guess around 4-5 to complete if you read everything, and 6-8 hours to find everything.

I don't have a release estimate, because I'm not giving release estimates at this time. I can tell you progress has been slow the past month for a variety of reasons. This is my hobby, and while I do plan on going full time this spring, right now I'm not. So, there are many nights where I don't put much work in and instead relax and play computer games. That is one of the main ways I keep it "fresh and exciting" and avoid burnout. I am aware that some of you have been waiting a year for this update. That sucks, but ultimately, the important date is going to be the full game completion. Believe it or not, I'm on pace to complete this beast this year. And THAT is what is going to be important in the end. Aylia's Story will be best played as a whole experience, not as little chunks here and there. On that note, I have to ask you all to keep being patient. Enjoy the lore posts, dev journals, outfit posts, etc. that come along the way. You'll get more gameplay soon.

Planned posts going forward:

Last but not least, I have not forgotten about the teaser. I'm a nitpicky bastard when it comes to drawing, and I had to shelve the CG I was working on for a few days because it was pissing me off. Yes, we artists can be emotional bitches... I'll update this post with the teaser link when it is done.

What!?! Someone is slower than me? *picks himself up off the floor* :-) I agree on the doing things that I enjoy part. That is something I've tried to stick with, which often has me jumping around a bit with development. One night drawing, one night writing, etc. It probably slows things down, but it keeps me energized and moving forward. Glad you agree on the eyes.

Yea, percentages are pretty hit or miss. Still, at this point, I know exactly what is left in chapter 1. Everything is fully planned out and with that information, I can estimate the percentage finished pretty accurately. Earlier percentages were probably a bit of a joke, now that I think about it. As for your analysis, it is surprisingly accurate. Still, I'd say my working power as a hobbyist is probably closer to 10-15%, as I truly believe if I was working solely on games I would be putting in 50ish hours a week. Currently, I put in around 5-10.

Thanks! I've staved off the burn-out and have been diligently working on it every night this week. It's been fun, and the dialogue I've written reflects that I think.

Ah I love status updates with percentages :D I always wonder how others apply the "needs this much time" value to things :P I know you won't give us an estimated release date, but I think its pretty easy: You say a few weeks, I'm guessing something like 5. As there's ALWAYS stuff that you don't account for and the last phase of a project often reveals additional bugs and flaws, which from what I've seen from you, you'd rather want to erase before release, I'd double that estimate. Now you also say you treat this as a hobby, which roughly gives you 30% of the working power you'd have otherwise (purely arbitrary :P ) So , again multiply by 3 and you get an estimate of 30 weeks left ,which would be early July. When I started writing this, it was meant as a joke, but now that i think about it it seems pretty realistic :D Looking forward to July. ;)

And... I literally JUST got the email notification for this update. After already receiving two emails about Yummy replying to my comments in this update.

Love it *.*

Yes. I will do that tonight. Thanks for reminding me.

Thank you for the detailed update, you're making some great progress despite not wanting to burn out. Definitely don't forget to do the things you enjoy or you'll end up resenting this project as taking all your free time. I've seen Devs that are working only on their game go at a much slower pace than you. That's something to be proud of, not to mention frequenting the forum and interacting with your audience! Finally, I was thinking exactly what you commented about the eyes, they are a fantastic improvement! They feel like they have soul to them.

InsaneBrain

Weird, I did NOT get an email about this post. I usually check my mail after work before coming here and was worried you didn't post an update. Glad I checked here right after! Naked preview pictures of Aylia always amuse me, since it reminds me of your earlier OP images in the Hongfire/ULMF thread, where Triste and Kira were clothed, but Aylia was there in her birthday suit. :P Anyway, I asked this in another post, but are you still planning on sending messages to the people who were selected for ideas for random encounter yet?

Solar Pants

I second this.

Solar Pants

Man, those eyes look so much better. Every time I come back and see this post I smile. http://imgur.com/boCyGxT - Old version

Someone take the sign away from her

Plot twist: When you appear in the game, you're NOT good at whatever it is you're doing. In fact, your catastrophic failure is what leads Aylia into a sexy accident! :P

Solar Pants

YT I hate you :< but I still love you :c it like my love for lactose, I lovebit although it isn't good for me

After you ignored our calls to make Chapter 1 a paid update, I've also increased my pledge to the 20$ mark, at least for the first paid segment of the game. All that's waiting on now is you to have it finished! At this point, I'm hoping to see it before we pass the 1 year mark of the initial demo. I'm not sure if it was supposed to be March or May, but I feel like you should be able to beat that regardless. And, now I'll have a chance to appear in your game! I don't know what I would be good at.

thswherizat

Yummy, I just want you to know how excited I am for this game. I am changing my pledge from $10 to $20 because I feel you should get paid for chapter 1, not because you are turning out a product and I should have to pay for it. It is because you are very passionate and dedicated to creating the best possible experience for myself the player and that is something you rarely find in the game industry as a whole anymore. It's not about money to you and that makes this project worth that much more to me. So thank you and I look forward to release! <3

Ah, artistry and emotion. This is why I'm glad I'm a cold, expressionless, logical computer-machine that primarily functions to heartlessly churn out lists of syntax errors, stylistic variations, and efficiency improvements. When not producing analytic number-crunching and database code in order to receive my biweekly revenue stream, anyway. Beep. Boop. Whirr. Progress is progress, and as you're keeping to your word about not charging for Chapter One (likely a good PR move as far as watching your Patreon amount shoot upwards following that release), then whatever pace keeps you from burning out is quite sufficient. I'd much rather see a well-assembled, detailed labor of love than anything rushed just for the sake of having an update. And as has been explained during previous discussions around the extended development time thus far, virtually 100% of the underlying systems and mechanics work is done during Chapter One, with not much extra crunchy-codey-mathy stuff required for future chapters. Given how long it takes, say, Scale Garden to crank out a brand new game with brand new systems and mechanics, development time thus far is fairly normal. Rome wasn't built in a day. Heck, it wasn't even sacked in a day. Maybe. I think. How fast do goths vandalize, again?

Proof of concept? You mean like that demo of the prologue that has been out for months now?

Smiling_Jack

Hmm...I was under the impression that you were a bit closer to finished than that. In December you said probably first or second week of January. I figured that meant it was nearly done and that it just got delayed due to circumstances but now it's TBA? Also, It's great and all that it'll be done as a whole this year but personally I'd like to see the proof of concept before we start talking about the paid bits.

Kladran

Glad to see how close we are. And I'm willing to bet with all the thought and work you're putting into it that it'll be worth the wait. The thought that we'll see the entire game by the end of the year's pretty ballin', and I'm looking forward to seeing just what kind of beast it'll be when it's complete. Rock on.
