Feature Preview: Chapter 1

Hello everyone,

I plan on doing another Dev Journal later this week, but thought I'd break it up with a quick feature preview. The above picture is an example from the gallery I've been working on a bit. There will be a blinking journal icon beside Aylia's bed in Chapter 1. When you activate the icon, you will get the option to "Read Aylia's journal." I know, some groundbreaking stuff here!

Anyways, if you read the journal, you'll be teleported to the gallery map. This map will have scenes from Aylia's Story separated by chapter/character. When you have a scene, the crystal sprite will be lit up, when you don't, it will be dark. Activating any crystal will bring up the above picture (unique to that scene).

As you can see in the picture, it will contain a photo of the scene (once discovered), the scene's name, how challenging it is to find the scene, and Bogwort's advice on where to find it. 1 crystal scenes are essentially unmissable, 2 crystal scenes are part of the main storyline and are hard to miss (think blinking icons, etc.), 3 crystal scenes are quest specific and if you choose a certain route, you'll probably get them, 4 crystal scenes are related to mini events and can be easily missed, and finally, 5 crystal scenes will require the player to figure out some developer trickery in order to find them--mwuahaha.

My plan for the gallery is to alleviate player frustration while still offering a challenge. With the gallery setup in this fashion, you'll always know what scenes you've missed, who they involved and which chapter they were in. Additionally, you'll have a vague hint from Bogwort and you'll know if you should be scouring the area in detail based on the "challenge." Once you've found a scene, you can revisit it in all its glory via two methods: 1) CG sequence/animation only, or 2) The entire scene with dialogue and choices.

Well, that's all I got for now. Time to get some sleep and dream about all the stuff I'm going to work on tomorrow! Let me know what you all think of the gallery idea!

I do hope he's alive and well! It's been awhile since he's responded! :p

Still on track for the 30th?

I'm waiting on this oft-spoken-of devjournal! We're so close to the (hopeful) release date now!

thswherizat

Well, damn! If all I needed to draw was a cartoon book to get you excited, I've been wasting a lot of time on all these female parts :-)

I might create the "Pseudo" version just for you. Hardcore challenge, I erase every third word of dialogue, remove the gallery, break Aylia's dagger arm so that her damage is gimped, turn Bogwort into a demonlord who devilishly gets her naked at every turn... err, wait, that last one sounds fun!

YummyTiger Gaming

Absolutely. I plan for Aylia's Story to have a bunch of different paths to take, so this should really help completionists.

YummyTiger Gaming

Agreed. My big hope is that instead of immediately turning to Google, this gives you an option to maintain a bit of the fun in finding these scenes, without all of the headache!

You won't go through the journal in a book format, I actually HATE when I have to slowly flip through pages to find my scene. Instead, there will be a line of crystal icons on a RPG Maker map and the icon lights up when the scene is found, stays dark otherwise. So, you move to the crystal and activate it, this page pops up detailing the event. So, the only hassle part is remembering WHERE the scene you want is (not a lot I can do there) and moving your character to the gallery part where that scene is (divided by chapter and character). And, I have some seriously developer trickery for a few scenes planned. Just thinking about it makes me smile evilly, hehehehehe.

Like it !!!

I already have a boner. Super excited

That is a great idea for the gallery! :)

I love the fact you give to ways to re-watch the scene. Good idea with the subtle hints, that's the shortfall of some games, you end up like "Where the fuck IS this scene... lemme just google..." This is one of the more thought out galleries I've come across. I'm guessing as you go through the journal you'll be flipping the pages, you should add page turning SFX perhaps? Also... what do you mean by 'developer trickery' you sneaky bastard?!

InsaneBrain

I hate the entire concept. If someone wants to re-watch a scene, they should just replay the game. And you should disable saving, too, so they have to go all the way back through from the beginning! That's real gaming, having no idea how much content there is or where to look for it, with one screw-up meaning you start all the way over! And every enemy needs at least 50,000 HP! Looking at a walkthrough or forum topic about the game should cause the game to delete itself and corrupt the drive it was on! RARGH! In all seriousness, this seems downright nifty.

Sounds as it should be :)

This is appreciated. Makes it easier to go back and complete the full game, with every scene.

Slarry

Ooh, nice. This sort of thing looks quite appealing, and a fun aspect to puzzle out for those explorers who poke at everything.

Mizu

NICE! I wish every game creator did this, the challenge bit is going to be really useful as well. 10/10
