Early Vid: Nortel Business Policy 2000 Switches

Taking a look at a pair of Nortel Networks Business Policy 2000 switches from 2001. Software will ultimately thwart our stack attempts, but it was fun looking over these units and getting them running again.

Video goes live Friday!

Juniper is definitely on the list, I've heard they're quite different

On the topic of a lot of switch CLIs being "IOS-like", I'd like to see you sit down with some Juniper switches to see what you think.

ha that's awesome!

Crazy coincidence, the day I this video came out I had someone come speak in my software engineering class about projects. He used to be a professor but also worked at Bell & Howell labs here in Canada. He said they actually used Nortel switches. He briefly mentioned Nortel so of course I had to mention this video. He spoke a bit more and said that Nortel would make the hardware to the spec that they gave and said that he actually worked on a bit of the cascading software. Small world haha

Definitely hear you on the PowerConnect switches. They were perfectly fine for basic network switching and working with a couple of VLANs, but the CLI and the Web UI were definitely something.

Same with Dell PowerConnect switches. Just different enough to be annoying!

As you saw when you pulled the stacking module out from one of the switches, Nortel acquired Bay Networks and kept the "Bay" in the BayStack name. Due to the prevalence of Cisco switches, HP ProCurve, Bay Networks/Nortel and other companies went with a IOS-like or CatalystOS-like command-line interface so that people who were familiar with IOS could mostly work on those other managed switches without learning a whole new set of commands. That said, HP ProCurve switches had some nuances when it came to their IOS-like interface that could easily trip up anyone who was used to IOS.

Linh Pham

Heck yeah! More network stacks 😍

Not sure if you're cursed or if your local delivery people just hate your guts. Getting that devices damaged in shipping is just crazy to me. :D
