Early Access: Episode 37 - Miracle Mile (1988)

Hey everyone, here's the latest episode! This was a movie recommended to us by Tyler on Patreon. Neither of us had ever seen this movie before so we figured it would make a good episode. We also talk about two other movies that director Steve De Jarnatt was involved in: Strange Brew (1983) and Cherry 2000 (1987). Enjoy!

This movie is great. Thank you for the recommendation. I even bought the soundtrack.

I love you guys, but sometimes your tastes just baffle me. Strange Brew is a masterpiece, it's the perfect way to do a Bob and Doug movie and not have it become The Ladies Man or It's Pat. It almost sounds like you guys were disappointed it didn't turn into a normal sketch character movie, which is ludicrous. And Ryan, I don't know what to do with you. If it were anyone else but you, I would end my friendship with someone if I found out they hated both Pee-wee Herman and Bob and Doug. Love the show, love you guys, but sometimes your takes are so bad they're mind-blowing.

Why would anybody nuke hawaii, though? Like I live in Detroit, and I can see Detroit being a nuke target simply because it has the potential for mass manufacturing if we went to war with someone.

So I fell asleep before the boys got into the movie, and now I'm glad, because I just watched the trailer to this film, and holy shit I'm intrigued. Its free on Tubi, watching it now.

Louie Caponecchia

Oh Ryan have you heard they're rebooting Married with Children?

I remember just taping this off of TV and thinking it was a romance story with a kinda cool vibe, and being blown away haha. Sometimes the hidden gems that flew under the radar stick with you more. Like i remember renting another Anthony Edwards movie "Gotcha!" where he's in a college club that does like... realistic paintball sieges around campus? And then they go on a class trip to Germany, and he gets tricked into crossing over to East Germany to spy on the west, but uses his paintball skills to beat socialism? It's so much more fun to talk about than say, Forrest Gump.

Thomas Bishop

Glad you checked it out guys! It’s quite a trip

Great episode fellas! Thank you for covering the movie, you talked about everything I hoped you were going to mention. Glad you liked the flick! Love finding those hidden gems

Also there was that one old guy who was playing golf during that, that guy is my favorite, kinda how I want to live at peace

The After Hours vibes with this film were strong, which really sent me back to when I first saw that. The most unrealistic thing about this movie fir me is that all the government big wigs are trying to flee to Antarctica, they'd 100 percent be heading for Mount Cheyenne or Raven Rock.

I'm sure I'm not alone in appreciating that you give us a preview of what the next episode will be. My wife and I got into the habit of having a double feature on Friday nights and I always try to watch whatever you guys are going to do next before the episode goes up. Maybe I'll pair Payback with Ransom considering I mistakenly thought it was it's sequel when it was coming out. Keep up the great work, guys, you outclass almost everyone I'm aware of who talks about movies on the Internet.

Appreciate the shoutout at the start guys. John Carpenter was/is apparently a big Tangerine Dream fan, I suspect they've rubbed off on each other a bit over the decades.

People I worked with a year or so later said there were military ships way up at Waikiki even before the warning, which are places you would never see them. And the way the whole system worked was shown on TV and it seemed impossible for especially one person to set alerts off accidentally. I lived then ocean-side of Nimitz highway between downtown and Pearl Harbor, and I didn't see anything tbh.

Thomas Bishop

A very memory-holed event. I still don't believe the official story, although I'm sure the feeling was completely surreal. Crazy stuff!

Ryan Lancello

I lived in Honolulu for six years, and one morning I was up just after my wife had left for work and every single phone on the island got an alert "BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL." It took 38 minutes before anyone knew it was a false alarm. My landlord was taking people to shelters and apparently people were stuffing their kids into storm drains and frantically driving to north shore, but if you want to know what you would really do in that situation: I sat for 40 minutes trying to google what was happening, occasionally calling my wife to ask if she heard anything, and walking outside to ask people if they heard anything. I kinda had a nauseous feeling deep in my gut the entire time, but I found most people were just sidetracked looking at news updates and by the time it was over realized they didn't do anything important.

Thomas Bishop

Lmao completely unintentional

Ryan Lancello

Well it was nice to take a break from 1999 for a week cause payback fun fact is also 1999.

Luke Gordnier

Sewer chaser man bothered me, too

Mary and Steve

Happy Birthday!

Almost Cult Classics

I was so happy to see Mykelti Williamson and Kurt Fuller Im going to be thinking about that gas station scene for a long time

Mary and Steve

Okay Ryan here's the difference between a Submachine Gun and a regular Machine gun, Submachine Guns use Pistol caliber while Machine Guns use Rifle, so Sub has a shorter cast and less gunpowder

JokersJuicyAss

An episode dropping on my birthday is the best birthday gift I could’ve received

Luke Gordnier

Thank you for suggesting this, Tyler! I just finished watching it :)

Mary and Steve

Well Ryan if you ever read the book Wild and Crazy Guys, they go into Bob and Doug, they were made to be as stereotypically Canadian as possible because the Canadian government got pissy that the show that was filmed in Canada wasn't Canadian enough.

JokersJuicyAss

OH BOY Welcome to Marwen, now I really can't wait for the aftershow.
