After discovering the truth that Lena was behind Cindy's accident, Polly sneaked into the hospital and rescued her from Lena's hands. Now, they arrived safely at Dr. Laura's home.
“You made it safely, Polly," Dr. Laura noted with satisfaction as soon as Polly closed the front door behind her. Cindy lay in her pink full body cast in her modified wheelchair which has tilted backwards and extended back rest, taking up nearly all the hallway space.
"Did you have any doubts, Dr. Laura?" Polly beamed all over, swaying on her two long leg walking casts with her underarm crutch tucked under her armpit.
"You sure there wasn't any trouble?" probed Dr. Laura.
"No, Dr. Laura. The disguise was perfect. Even Lucy didn't recognize me." Giggling, Polly stuffed the prison guard's uniform into a bag and smoothed out the wrinkles of her nurse's dress, which she had put on during the trip. Caught in her neck and brackbrace, it had been quite an artistic feat.
"And Gemma's bringing the ambulance back again?"
"It all went smoothly, Dr. Laura," Polly announced, emphatically reassuring. From the sound of her voice, her delight was audible. She bent over Cindy's face, who was forced to stare at the ceiling because of her casted neck. "You're safe now, Cindy."
"I hope so," Dr. Laura grumbled. "It was almost too easy for me."
"Oh, Dr. Laura, don't be so pessimistic," said Polly with slight reproach, stroking her finger over the pink fiberglass cast that encased Cindy's abdomen.
Dr. Laura growled briefly at first, then motioned for Polly to make her room next to Cindy.
Finally, Dr. Laura pushed her face into Cindy's field of vision. "Welcome to my home!" she said, looking a little gruff. Not knowing where to put her casted arms, she flailed around in front of Cindy's eyes then.
"Dr. Laura! What happened to your arms?" asked Cindy in amazement.
"They're broken!" Dr. Laura's water-blue eyes slid along Cindy's full body cast and paused for a few seconds at her legs. "So are both of my legs! You're not the only patient here."
"I'm so sorry, Dr. Laura," Cindy said, sweetly and innocently. "I can't even imagine you in a real cast. A plastered doctor... it seems so wrong!"
With a blank expression, Polly suppressed a giggle at Cindy's comments. "What happened to you, Dr. Laura?" asked Cindy sympathetically.
"What happened?!" Dr. Laura snorted derisively.
"Let's just say I had an accident at work."
"Dr. Laura may have plastered both arms and legs, Cindy, but she can't compete with your casts," Polly warbled a little too cheerfully, still thrilled with her coup of rescuing Cindy from the hospital. She caught a disapproving look from Dr. Laura.
"Don't get cocky, Polly. Cindy may be here, but..." Dr. Laura hesitated, then nodded toward a door.
"... We still have to be careful. Let's go to your future room, Cindy. It's more spacious there, and we can talk about Lena." She gritted her teeth.
"My sister Lena!"
"So technically, only one can go here and that's me!" exclaimed Polly, grinning all over her face, ignoring Dr. Laura's annoyed growl. Then she walked on her stiff legs to Cindy's modified wheelchair and pushed it into Dr. Laura's guest room, which she had made up as a sickroom. For this purpose, it was really convenient that Dr. Laura had had most of her room doors built extra wide so that she could indulge her medical fetish unchecked within her own home. She positioned Cindy so that she could look out the window when she squinted to the side, put the brakes on, made sure they were really tight, and put the back of Cindy's back up a little so they could look at each other. She had already turned around when she checked the brakes a third time, just to be very sure. Then, when she was finally satisfied, she hobbled back into the hallway on her two long casted legs. There, Laura struggled to maneuver her wheelchair.
"Please be patient, Dr. Laura. Don't you know I'm coming to get you?"
"I can't stand being helpless at all," Dr. Laura growled as Polly got behind the handles of her friend's wheelchair and began pushing her into Cindy's new room. "You know, Polly, a little cast or two, gladly garnished with a neck brace for a few hours or a few days, I like that. But this!" She raised her plastered arms in a gesture of shiftlessness.
"Even I'm so fed up with this already, I can't imagine how Lena would feel if we put her in a body cast." A subtle smile played around her lips as Laura gloated over her own thoughts. But she immediately looked up as they walked into Cindy's new room.
"So, what do you want to tell us about your sister?" asked Cindy as Polly moved to stand next to Dr. Laura at the side of Cindy's bed.
Polly and Dr. Laura exchanged a quick glance. They had decided to tell Cindy the truth to some extent, but to leave out the part about Lena's role in the stair accident for now.
"Well, Cindy, I'm sure you remember how my sister Lena had the walking stick attached to your cast leg..." began Dr. Laura carefully.
"Yeah, that seemed like a good idea," Cindy admitted.
"No, it wasn't!" objected Dr. Laura immediately.
"Because the stick broke, you fell down the stairs. So she's kind of the culprit, isn't she?"
"I don't know, Dr. Laura. I was rushed by a strange older woman. If I hadn't been in such a hurry, maybe nothing would have happened."
For a split second, Dr. Laura's face contorted. Cindy was really way too nice. But soon she regained her composure. "Still, I don't think you're safe in the hospital, especially in Lena's hands."
"But she's your boss, isn't she?"
"Unfortunately, yes," Dr. Laura grumbled. "But she doesn't know anything about medicine. That's why you're better off with us." She hesitated for a moment. "Normally, anyway! But look at us now, we're cripples ourselves with several broken bones." Laura wiggled her fingers and toes in affirmation.
'But I only have one single broken bone,' Polly thought, crossing her arms in front of her ample breasts. She sighed softly that she couldn't tell anyone but Dr. Laura the secret about the casted leg she'd been wearing for weeks just for fun.
"But then who will take care of us? I don't think even Polly could handle two of us at once." Cindy's movements were limited because of her casted body, but she looked like she was just shrugging her shoulders.
"To be honest, Polly won't be here," Dr. Laura confessed. As Cindy seemed to stiffen in her full body cast, she hastened to add, "Don't worry, my niece Gemma will be nursing us before and after her work, and she'll be sleeping here."
"Wait a minute! Gemma is your niece? Is she, like, Lena's daughter?" Cindy's voice squeaked with excitement. "Why would she help us?"
"She's helping us because she's having some problems with her mother."
"They don’t have a good relationship” Polly interjected, adding.
"Okay... If you say so, then I trust you. But then where will Polly be? Isn't she helping Gemma?"
For a few seconds, no one said a word. Then Cindy looked intently at Polly, and she returned the gaze calmly. There was no need for a word. Something in Polly's expression made Cindy realize that Polly had an important job to do and they had to part ways.
Finally Dr. Laura continued to speak: "Of the two of us, Polly will be the first to get well and back to work under Lena again. And it will be difficult for her to be the same person after knowing all of these. So, I think Polly will need to sharpen her skills, and I believe there’s a place that she can learn that. I will explain you later Polly.”
“Yes, Dr.Laura. Anything for you and Cindy. I’m ready” Polly replied.
"But will she be okay? She has two broken legs and then that bad spine!" Cindy protested.
Polly hobbled over to Cindy and held her toes sticking out of the cast on her left leg.
"Don't worry about me, Cindy. I'll be fine. I can take care of it, you know. I'm the ultimate nurse Polly. You may be wondering why I'm holding your toes. I really wanted to hold your hand, but since those toes are the only thing I can hold, I can't help it." Winking, Polly laughed softly at her own joke.
Dr.Laura remained serious and frowned. But Cindy joined in the laughter. As she indicated a movement, a sharp pain ran through her entire body and she winced in pain.
"Oh, you poor thing!" exclaimed Polly, folding her body at the waist like a jackknife so that her lips could touch Cindy's toes. Gently, she began to suck on them.
"Pol... Polly. What are you doing?" stammered Cindy, her face red.
"Easing your pain, Cindy. Feeling better now?" replied Polly in a brief pause before returning her full attention to Cindy's toes, letting her tongue work its own magic.
"I... I'm fine. But... But please stop!" Even though she secretly enjoyed it, Cindy found it inappropriate to receive this kind of treatment from a nurse.
"All right. I hope you feel better." Polly winked at her again and gave her one last kiss on her big toe.
"Ahhh..." Cindy couldn't help but let out a moan of pleasure.
"Looks like someone is enjoying the situation," Polly teased her patient, gently stroking her toes with her nose.
"Please.... Stop it, Polly" Cindy rolled her eyes so that almost all that could be seen was the whites, which contrasted sharply with her flushed face.
"Bzzzz... bzzzz... " Polly had opened her mouth to tease her more, but the ringing of Cindy's phone made her stop.
Cindy sighed, glad for the interruption. "Can you help me with my phone, please, Polly?"
"Sure!" Polly grabbed the phone on the table and held it to Cindy's ear.
"Hi, it's Cindy!"
"Hello, my best friend. How are you?"
"What, Joy? Is it you? Oh, my God! Ive been missing you for what feels like a century. I'm... uh... now... fine..." The last word, however, sounded anything but convincing.
"Glad to hear it, Cindy. I'm not doing too well, though. I broke my arm last week. I slipped on the stairs in my office and now I'm wearing a cast on my arm. It even reminds me of when you got your first cast."
"What, you had an accident on the stairs too?" blurted out Cindy.
"What do you mean by 'too', Cindy?"
"Ummm.....nothing!" Cindy was glad Joy didn't see how red her face was.
"Okay, where are you now?"
"I am.... At my house. Why?"
"Hmmm, that's funny because I'm standing outside your house and no one seems to be home."
"Ehhh! Why... Why are you in front of my house?"
"I got a vacation and thought I should visit my best friend after all these years! It's been so long since we've seen each other. Is this the right address you gave me, Cindy?"
"Um ... Yes. But... Oh... the connection is bad right now, I think..." Cindy made a few croaking noises and, quick-witted, Polly ended the call.
Taking a breath, Cindy ignored Polly's and Dr. Laura's questioning faces.
"Oh, God! How am I going to explain all this to Joy?"
