The 1st Affordable "IBM PC Compatible"

Lately, I've felt like exploring the IBM PC Compatible world more. It's the world I was pre-occupied with from 1995 onwards, but I seem to neglect it. This video, then, gets a little bit closer. The Sanyo MBC-550 was an 'almost' IBM PC Compatible, but one which completely out-priced its competitors by smashing through the $1k floor.

In this video I explore why and how, and then take a look at the machine.

This is the Patreon exclusive version, as the release version is due to have Skillshare sponsorship in (which nicely covers the hardware costs). They're still reviewing that, so in the mean time, enjoy!

Comments

When I was a kid, my dad's computer was an Apricot. I didn't rate it much at the time, but I now fondly remember the green screen (with its weird matte feel) and the second display in the keyboard. AFAIK, he only used CP/M-86 on it, never saw the MS-DOS compatibility used.

Nki

Ever onward IBM!
