Of course I don't want to overhype this just in case something is less than spectacular down the line, I'm just excited at the moment because JJK fans like me adored this story arc in the manga and so far it's adaptation has been amazing.

2023-09-11 16:33:29 +0000 UTCTwo standout things about this episode: First off, it's packed with references/homages to both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, two extremely popular Mecha anime. The animation style and certain animation sequences (like Mahito drilling into Kokichi's cockpit, as well as Kokichi's heavily shaded face when he goes in for his final attack) are very Gurren Lagann, and certain shots are almost identical to Evangelion. The entire episode was basically "Mechjutsu Kaisen". Second, there are two ANIME EXCLUSIVE sequences in this fight that extend it. The first one is Mahito running through the forest while shape shifting into different forms to avoid the lasers, and the second is the sequence when Mahito breaks into the cockpit and Kokichi has an emergency spare Mechamaru in there as a contingency and used that as like a final desperation attack. In the manga there was no last Mechamaru and Kokichi was screwed so he just went for the stab. I really love it when JJK's anime adds things like that. Both of these additions show just how stacked the staff is this season and I hope this level of quality is consistent going forward, because if you can believe it this whole fight was basically just an appetizer.
