Tattooing Journey+ Arden High ARCs Podcast!

Hello campfire besties, I'm here with something I promised a bit ago: a podcast all about my experience with tattooing, how I got into it, what supplies I use, my insecurities, and my thoughts on how it might (or might not) fit into my regular career as a book illustrator! I also talk shortly about how it feels to now have Advance Reader Copies (!!) of ARDEN HIGH: Twelfth Grade Night, the graphic novel I spent all last year illustrating.

Podcasts are my favorite thing to make here on patreon, and also my favorite thing to listen to from the creators I'm a patron of. Voices are fun and intimate, and I love to put them on while I cook, clean, work, walk, etc. If there's anything you'd like to hear me talk about, I'm all ears!

I've got some interesting plans coming up this next week which will make for fun patreon content...see you soon!

Congrats on your upcoming tattoo journey! I've been slowly handpoking myself since feb. 2020 (with the exception of close friends & family) and it's been such an eye opener! I've been curious about getting into more machine-based work, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a hugeeee chicken. You're honestly the first person I've heard speak about it in so much detail and im just geekin out,,, its so amazing to see one one your fave artists going into similar fields as yourself :'-) will gladly be supporting your work/journey along the way! Cheers!!

I've been (slowly) creating a tattoo portfolio ever since 2019 and last wednesday i had a coffee with a tattoo artist to ask some feedback on it before i go and show it to the person i want to apprentice with (they are mutuals)! They said they are a 100% sure I will get the job💞It was so nice when you told us that you wanted to tattoo as well because I feel like our careers will be very similar since I also want to be a book illustrator😄I love that you are here showing us that that is possible!!

so many congratulations on the tattooing and the ARC!! I was so surprised it was out so fast but then again, you've been working on this for ages and I guess time just flies when you look back on a big project :) I can't wait to get my hands on it! Plus, mushroom rain is beautiful, I got my bookstore friends to stock it and they're obsessed with it. Thank you for sharing this sweet lil podcast (and yes only gay people can talk to me in public too, big freakin mood) <3

Honestly, I don't think I'd ever want to do color! It's more difficult to work with and just not really my style. Perhaps I would experiment with a single spot color like red, but that probably won't be any time soon. Thanks so much Alyssa!

So cool that we all have different spots that are good, or bad, when it comes to pain! It's an interesting surprise every time. Like for me, doing my own inner calf wasn't too bad, but it's a small tattoo. My shoulder was almost pleasant, like a massage. I have been thinking about some possible ass tattoos, but I am scared that THAT is the hellspot for me--who knows!!

Yay, thank you so much!! Happy Spring. <3

Definitely having that head-image of what it could look like is so hard! I can see my style translating to tattoos in my mind, but when it comes to actual practice it just isn't coming up quite right yet. As with all forms of art I have tried for the first time in the past though, I know it will start to look like the image in my head with time :-) Thanks!!

Oh interesting to hear that it may be a little more accepting in the UK! Taking that leap from fake skin to real skin can be scary, but it's an entirely different experience and will be cool to see what you think of it! I kept hearing "real skin is so much easier than fake skin", but I don't think that's the case--I think it's just a completely different type of experience, both have their own pros and cons. Good luck on this tattoo learning process, we are definitely in the same boat and I'm happy to support (and be supported)!

Hi Jamie! I've just started as your Patron but I have been following you on other socials for quite a while now:) happy to be supporting you here as well! Anyway, I am in a similar situation as I am a full-time Animator/Illustrator in a small studio, so my schedule is REALLY busy most of the time, but on the side I take on so many hobbies... For the last couple years I've been dabbling here and there with handpoke tattooing and I've built a bit of confidence with that thanks to my own skin and friends in the industry like you said. I feel like here in the UK the industry is a bit more "open" that what it seems like in the US but still it does feel really gatekeepy and posting about it online can really be overwhelming in so many ways. I've only just bought my tattoo machine three weeks ago, still on the fake skin practice but really looking forward to do the jump and tattoo myself and my partner. It was great to hear someone else just talking about how it is and it gave me a bit of a reminder/push to keep going!

This was such a fun listen while I cleaned, felt like we were just chillin. Really interesting to hear about the tattooing stuff, I do feel like the pandemic changed a lot, I have quite a few friends who do like “homie tattooing” now and I think it’s cool and definitely in the spirit of the art imo. Learning new things is hard, especially when you have an idea of how it *could* look in your head! So cool that you have three physical copies of your books now! Just carry them all with you every time you go to Starbucks in case someone questions u 😤

love listening to you ramble! everything is such a journey eh? Im stoked to see where yer inky path takes you! I love tattoos so much :’) always ever so inspired by you and yer artistic journey. yer a silly snail, yew make me giggle and I appreciate u! 🌷✨🐌 happy spring Jamie :~) !!!

As someone who's only been on the receiving end of a tattoo gun, it was really cool to hear about your experience with it! For me, my shoulder tattoo was painful but bearable. But I have a large tattoo covering my inner calf and THAT was horrible. I had to take several breaks and all of my mental energy was expended on not crying because of the pain. I don't regret the tattoo at all, but that experience was pretty intense!

Erynn Church

This is great hearing about your tattoo experience! I didn't realize how much is involved with the tattoo process. I know you mentioned only working with black ink now and not doing color at the moment, but do you this is something you'll branch out to in the future? I think you're doing really amazing stuff so far and cant wait to see where you'll go with it :)

Alyssa Maziarz

I had so much fun listening to this one, the idea of tattooing does seem so inaccessible so hearing you have such a great experience with it is fantastic! Can't wait to hopefully have a Jamie tat (done by you) one day! I've also been working on flash and I wouldn't even be the one to tattoo it and it's scary to commit to posting it so I can't even imagine the nerves there! Also yes only gay people can interrupt me in the starbucks I agree

nepeteaa

I got myself some tattoo gear last year, but still haven't really picked it up because the thought of butchering something I made and that will forever be there (especially on someone else) makes me super anxious. So I really understand why you want to wait and practice before you start tattooing people that you don't know! Also congrats on the Arden High ARC! It's going to be amazing!
