Patrons Ask GN Update - May 2025

Hey, everyone!

I've never tried this before, but decided to just upload the video straight into Patreon. Hopefully it handled it OK. After the upload, Patreon yelled at me to use a lower bitrate and resolution next time. If it's no good, we'll upload it to YT unlisted instead.

We have a new Patrons Ask GN episode. Since this is the first Ask GN video in a while, we aggregated and answered viewer questions from recent video uploads and our last Patreon post. For the YouTube ones, we combined/edited/aggregated several together since we took the questions from multiple sources that asked similar things.

Please leave questions below for the next one. We're planning to mostly pull from here next time, although we might pull from the comments if there's something good.

Thanks for all your support!

Question: Will you do anything you can to try to get your hands on a DGX Spark (Nvidia) and test it (image-generating LLM for example), and compare it to RTX 5090 at the same task for example? *_*

Some unpleasant sizzle in Steve's voice.

Hello Steve and the whole GN Team. I'm a subscriber to both GN and the Economist, and was excited to hear you discuss some of their recent Singapore coverage in the gpu movie. Have you considered reaching out to the Economist's Drum Tower podcast for an interview?

S

Thanks for the video! (If you could get the mic a wee bit closer next time to reduce the room sound on the mic, would be great, but no big deal...)

Steve Francis

Both would be fine though :)

Steve Francis

Patreon better for me than YouTube also. Thanks!

Question from the Alienware review: Do you ever test the RMA or warranty process for something like that SSD? I would hope that falls under "manufacturing defect". It definitely looks untrustworthy, surely they damaged some solder joints.

It seems like bios settings are still defaulting to whatever is the most reliable, and not necessarily performant. Are there bios settings you recommend everyone change that maybe most people don't know about?

Jay is a bootlicking clown, I enjoy watching him lose How long before AMD does their nVidia impersonation and shakes you down for access to their people? I had hoped you'd do a Snapdragon review and totally blast Qualcomm's wild lies at last year's Computex. Didn't hear anything from them this year...

CC

How do you tell when a GPU is dying? Like, not yet dead/inoperable, but possibly degrading and on it's way out soon. Are there artifacts to look out for? Occasional blue screens?

Q: With the endless sea of CPU coolers to choose from (both liquid and air), how do you choose which ones to review? Is it just ones that offer some new feature or make extravagant claims? Or is there some other metric you use to pick them? Thanks to you and the GN team for everything you all do for consumers.

Griff

Love this, man! Do more if you can! And thanks for the effort and care. I’m loving the tool kit lol. Perfect quality.

I appreciate this, thank you!

I personally prefer unlisted videos on YT as I can add them to my watch later from my phone and watch them wherever I want without having to login to Patreon first.

I've been wondering about airflow paths in the Fractal Torrent series -- I have the compact. By default, it has no rear exhaust fan and the PSU is mounted at the top, so it has to pull hot air from inside the case. It's also in the path of the exhaust air from the CPU (air) cooler. Would this have a negative impact on the lifespan or performance of the PSU? And what's the best way to do exhaust in this case?

Earthling

I think an unlisted video is better than uploading here because the YouTube app is nicer to listen to 'podcast like' videos like this than Patreon. But it looks and sounds fine!

When are you guys gonna do hats and/or beanies? I always wear a hat and want a GN hat.

Justin Beard

Like the Q&A session and the video quality is fine.

Are there any subjects your team would like to learn more about to better inform yourselves and potentially improve related reporting, but not directly report on. Are there any such subjects that the team has found it challenging finding information for?

Josh Hoppes

C'mon, answer the real questions: Would you rather fight 10 Patrick-sized Wendells or 1 Wendell-sized Patrick?

Dr Dysfunction

Thanks Steve! Q: You always have that pen cup in your office, which is made of old DIMM modules. I want to have/make something like that too. Can you please hold it up to the camera next time and/or show how it's constructed? Please, please! THX

Nihilius

Hmm, I'll certainly be interested to tune in for some XeSS stuff down the road. I'm interested to see where Intel will go with their 3rd Gen DGPU's.

Erik Ray

What happened to the GPD win 4 review you guys were planning a long time ago?

Awkwbear

more of a suggestion than a question. With all the investment of time, understanding, testing, and equipment that GN has was wondering if GN would consider coming up with something similar to Martin's Liquid Labs (yes real old site) estimators. Namely Flow; Radiator; fan; etc. spreadsheets (you can find archives of his ~2008 stuff here https://martinsliquidlab.petrastech.com/ ). This was (and still is though very dated) useful in trying to plan out system builds but since at least *I* lack the equipment to profile new items it's frozen in amber. If such a resource could be updated with new information and kept up to date (heck even every other year or so opposed never) would really IMNHO serve the community very well.

HappyHeuristic

I understand there are no ads, but my issue is I have ADHD and I'm going to forget that this video exists in 5 seconds, let alone whenever I have some time to actually watch the video. 100% a me problem, but would be awesome if there's also a YouTube mirror (since then it goes straight into a playlist). Either way, thanks a lot for your hard work as always! (and hope you're all getting enough sleep!!!)

What is the real world performance impact of capping the wattage of a CPU? For thermal reasons I run a 13600K in an ITX system with a short term power limit of 85W and a long term power limit of 65W. It still seems to hit the intended clock speeds and reverting the cap to the Intel defaults results in significantly higher power draw and higher temperatures. What benefit am I missing by implementing a cap?

Alec Wilby

Good point on the lack of YT ads! More reason to keep them here.

GamersNexus

Hadn't even thought about that! A great point.

GamersNexus

Agreed, This is better. No Ads.

How’s life for everyone at GN

OnlyFran

This is great because there won't be any youtube ads for patreon subs, thanks a bunch! It would be even better if you had direct downloads available to patreon subscribers so it's easy to watch on the smart tv ad free.
