Overhauls & Upgrades! Fan Tester, GPU Benches, CPU Benches

Hey everyone!

I've been compiling a big list of overhauls and upgrades we're making lately behind the scenes. We're filming some of them, but lots of it is just never going to be shown (besides getting used in video), so I thought I'd share it here since it won't be anywhere else.

List below as we set up for next year!

Fan Tester

First-up, the long-awaited fan tester: We fell behind on this project as the acoustic chamber, laser scanner, and full overhaul of CPU and cooler testing over the last 2 years took priority, but also because we lacked a peer to do peer review with. Fortunately, my good friend Aris from Hardware Busters now provides fan testing as a consulting service for companies. We have no plans to do this (our view is that it creates conflict, but it's his core business and we have no problems with him doing it); however, the fact that he does this means we can work with him for peer review.

Patrick and I were working on the fan tester a couple weeks ago after months of it sitting and waiting for me to find time to get back to it. Part of GN's approach is quality over quantity, but that also means we stall out sometimes because I just focus my efforts on getting other stuff to 100%. If I am not yet knowledgeable on something new, that means our barrier to get to publishable is very high these days, as the expectation for quality is high. We want to hit those targets, which means we stay silent and publish nothing if we're just not happy with where our knowledgebase is and our understanding of the testing is.

But we're finally getting them. I am on-target to publish a couple fan pieces before the end of the year. We're moving pretty quickly on it now and I've been moonlighting after the team leaves each day to work on some fan tester projects. The debut is a feature test relating to PC cases, actually, but I can't say much more than that yet. We won't be able to do a full round-up of fans until we slowly establish the footing for individual reviews.

To solve for the expectations "problem" as we've gotten bigger: We'll basically publish all of the first charts with large "EXPERIMENTAL CHART" branding. This is something we've been using lately. The "good problem" to have is that we're pretty trusted these days; the bad part of that is that it's difficult to explore and experiment with new charts that we're not fully confident in, but obviously publishing those experiments will expose them to useful feedback that allows us to advance them. Lately, we've been clearly branding certain charts as "experimental" so that they can get out there and we can play around with new ideas for data presentation and testing. We'll do that with the fans, that way it's clear when we feel like it's at a place to be fully trusted for purchasing vs. when it's still new.

Very exciting!

Test Room Upfit

Does anyone want a video of this? We're overhauling the testing room again with some new tables and test benches, including a full build-out of the power testing station for GPUs. This will be both a computer component and physical furniture overhaul.

GPU Testing

Our next round of GPU testing is in development now. We are experimenting with adding these games to the lineup:

We are removing:

Any other games you want to see?

In addition to this, we're adding GPU power efficiency benchmarks similar to our CPU power efficiency benchmarks. This will look at the FPS/W (or W/FPS, depending) and other useful metrics for power consumption versus performance. We might experiment with some Vsync'd/FPS locked tests as well to normalize, but not sure yet.

CPU Benches

No major changes to the CPU benches, but we did just move to a new kit of RAM for the last round of reviews. Our prior Corsair and Gskill kits had some issues on the newer 9000 series parts for stability, so we swapped to a Lexar kit.

That's it for the updates for now! The questions remain for you all:

Thanks, everyone!

Late to the party but would like to see the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 vs SE, vs Phantom Spirit 120 vs SE. There seem to be some dimensional differences between the models so i'm not sure SE and non-SE versions can be compared as a proxy for each other (i.e. PA 120 vs PS 120 SE might not give us an accurate picture of the PA 120 non-SE).

As someone thinking of returning to PC gaming I would like to know how to spend wisely. The GPU seems the focal point rather than CPU these days. So take a look at what Intel, AMD, nVidia is offering here in spring 2025 and explain system choices around these GPUs. Like if one picks a 5070, what are the tradeoffs with what is left for a decent PC build? A 9070, etc.

It would be interesting to test the relationship between air flow and the separation between fan and front panel. When examining a case, you note whether there is a separation. But is it enough separationl? Is it too much - beyond the point of diminishing returns and just wasted space? The fan testing equipment and evolving test procedure gives you a chance to put some numbers to the issue.

Larry

Discord link still works.

Jordan

Anyone know if the discord link is dead?

BinkoBunko

Would you like to test some truly vintage hardware? I have an old 8800GT that I can send you. Don't know if it even supports UEFI. From an old brand BFG.

Ian Kester-Haney

Any chance to add Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 for testing? Different kind of game especially at 4K.

AudiRSDriver

id recommend stalker2 when it gets a few bugs worked out for the game testing, it seems to be a heavy user of cpu and gpu alike for me. rx7800xt/5700x3d. on another note glad yall take time to get things right. great work steve and other gn peeps. o/

Deverrence

Merry Christmas !!

Gnou

I kinda sorta agree, but on the other hand, Lexar has some very intriguing offers. Generally, I love to see independent tests of unknown or unusual brands, just to see what's out there. Just recently I saw a HANSEATIC Gaming-PC. For those who do not know the brand: They usually make refrigerators and freezers.

Picblick

Why Lexar ram? Crucial/Micron is what I've seen people seeing as IT levels of stability. Three shops I've worked at all swore by it.

dabockster

Remember to take time for yourself. Fan testing is super exciting but it'll come in time.

Dest

Nice, thank you for the updates! If and when you get to properly test fans, I would love to see the SilverStone FHP141 in an independent test. They are so versatile, I love them! 140mm and 120mm, thicker than regular fans. Absolute beasts when it comes to air throughput. And they can get quiet too, but that could also be me getting deaf from the full speed. But I still want to know how well they perform objectively! Fans fans fans fans fans fans fans [...]

Picblick

That'll make for an even 20 years of GTA V benchmarks then.

Kadah

Workspace reorganization vid would be nice to inspire me to improve my own. +1 for adding Factorio to CPU benchmarks. I'm sure people from that community can provide a multi planet mega factory that runs sub 60ups on any system. Regarding the fan testing, I'd love to see some tests on server and industrial PC fans. Would be nice to know how far of from their datasheets they are plus it would give the higher numbers in the charts some best (airflow and pressure) and worst (noise and power) to compare to. There's a lot of us with access to such fans you can have for testing. I have several server systems where EACH fan has a max power of about 200W. I modded one in to a fume extractor for the workbench.

Kadah

Definitely like to see walk through of the testing room updates. I’d second Stalker 2 but not right now.

Stephen Thompson

Consider adding Horizon Forbidden West for GPU testing

Jaibir

I would be interested in seeing STALKER 2 in the benchmarks, but maybe at a later date when (hopefully) it's in a better place so that you don't have to keep updating the results as they fix the game.

Scalarmotion

Really excited for fan testing

Yours truly, Johnny Dollar

I'm very surprised that Lexar had the more stable RAM, over 2 more well-known non-Chinese brands. Makes the DDR5 market seem like even more of a minefield.

Hames Jofmann

Dunno if it'd be a good GPU test bench game, but MechWarrior 5: Clans is a new UE5 tltle. Might not be the best optimized, although that could make for a potential separate content piece.

Cleansweep

Fan testing, I almost thought everyone forgot about that, much appreciated as all the other fan charts date back to the dawn of pain.

ZarconDeeGrissom

a BTS episode would be great, esp if we can see the cats some more.

ZarconDeeGrissom

BTS is always welcome

Aaron Hopkins

I'd like a walk-through of the testing room updates

Timmy Strawn

Yes to any and all behind-the-scenes content.

Daniel

An unpolished BTS that won’t require so much editing would also work for me. I also want to add how much I enjoyed your collaboration with Wendell, what we got to see on both channels and insights like the Prime Directive guiding reviews/decisions are both fun and beautiful to watch.

Adrian

Behind the scenes sounds fun! The only games I noticed coming out this year are dragon age and Frostpunk 2, but I don't know if those are useful for testing anything

Demi

BTS is always very much appreciated. Publish it on GN Extras, so more people, not only your Patreon backers, can enjoy them. I think it could even improve the general understanding of your testing methods.

Dudummeskind

Maybe checkout S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 as a potential entry?

Philip Campbell

I agree that seeing more behind the scenes stuff would be fun and worth while. I am not sure if you would post that on the main channel or GN Extras but it would be nice to see other content if the time and resources are available. Game wise, I know they are not 2024 games but The Last of Us Part 1, and Dying Light 2 are incredibly demanding games so I am not sure if that is something you would consider.

David Swenda

Keep GTA V until GTA VI comes out!

chiralitycounts

Your behind the scenes stuff is always so interesting and fun, so definitely yes I'd love to see more of it.

Jimi Hunt

I wouldn't mind seeing how Cyberpunk 2077 handles, unless there are more graphical intensive games with Ray Tracing. Also wish there was a new intense RTS game so we could see what card rendors the many small units better.

Dominic von Bismarck

Glad to hear the fan testing is on the way, I was actually thinking about this this morning. Behind the scenes stuff is always appreciated also 👍
