Steam Punk Slugs -Bissell Missile version II

Evan created some more commutator slugs from vacuum cleaner motors.   This time we propel them at over MACH 2  with some surprising results.

thanks everyone!!

Wow.... Being the super duper expert... let me explain what happened on the second shot, @ estimated 2300 fps/ 2 mach. a) the commutator is not well structurally held together all the copper pieces are just bonded together (maybe around a weak center composite sleeve). b) The shot cup acted with the steel center piece/weight/penetrator acted as a sabot to launch the commutator. c) The device achieved stabilization in flight either by spin or aerodynamically or combination. d) The blow wave and base drag low pressure pushed on the nose of the center steel part... while at the same time the spin rate caused the weakly held together commutator ring to slightly expand... this caused the steel insert to be pushed back through the commutator part against the shot cup which also had aerodynamic drag forces pushing it back .... that combination cause the steel part and shot cut to be cleaning separated from the commutator ring... allowing the commutator to have stabilized flight not to be disrupted to any great extent. e) After separation form the launch sabot or pusher the commutator flew straight like a ring projectile to the target - I don't know if a bow wave was formed creating high drag - or if the speed and shape were just right to allow the hole/duct through the commutator's center to swallow the bow wave in the air... allowing the thing to have less drag... actually I think the bow wave was swallowed because otherwise the drag is very high and I did not notice indication in flight and you would not had as big/deep of impression. f) When the ring projectile of the commutator hit the aluminum plate target it had a high energy dump rate putting all its energy into the contact nose of that projectile. This formed a ring penetrator... did you notice it penetrated the aluminum and creating a donut like impression. g) This is the neat part if the thing had been shot through thinner plate it would have cleanly punched a hole through. BUT and it is a big one if that were like an old fashioned oil can or can of paint it would have punched a clean hole through both sides... allowing the oil or paint to pour out.... if the commutator had held together. Or, if at higher velocity it would have left a center core.... like an apple core

Lol, my wife saw it in the cabinet and didn't know what to think about it.

Lol I keep forgetting. Thank you Ray!

12 grains of E3 (Alliant) for the slower ones and 23 grains for the fast ones.

That’s the “TP” that you take to a friends house and swap it out when they’re not looking, just before you leave!

All plates are 6061 alloy.

What powder did you use to fire such a light load at 750 fps and 2300 fps? I'm guessing 10 grains and 30 grains of titewad
