R-Candy rocket slugs

A viewer created these slugs for us to test out -  his version of a modern Gyrojet round.

Bone dry California can still burn with these sugar diablos. Granted...they are likely to be more stable but it is an experimental and untested round. Would it be safer on a range... anyway...cool round... (well...actually HOT round). Respect to you all 👍😎👍

Yo...Jeff. Did i not suggest this concept a while ago...so did another of us... I mentioned estes small motors...

That poor bear.

A tests of the same slug with inert propellent would demonstrate how much thrust is really coming from the shotgun primer and the small black powder charge. With a little more powder it would also show how stable those projectiles are without additional thrust. A faster bring rocket propellent might get them moving faster, perhaps black powder coated rice hulls or a quicker burning formula. Without a nozzle, it's going to be tough to duplicate the gygrojet performance, such as it is. Possibly, but it does weigh more than plastics and fiberglass. I'm not certain if it weighs more than graphite, however it's not uncommon to make nozzles for rocket motors out of graphite, so if graphite can stand the stress of being fired out of a shotgun then it might make for an interesting material to test with (even if it is too heavy).

I thought the teddy bear crotch shot was the best..!!😨😂

I tend to disagree with Jeff..

Mythbusters used a small charge of black powder to ignite multiple rocket engines. Just a pinch in the base and cover with thin tape. The shotshell primer will do the rest.

Great job on those slugs and congratulations on having them tested here :-)

I have next to no knowledge about slugs, but wouldn't Alumin(i)um be a good solution for material?

TheNetsrac

Very interesting prototype slug. Thank you for making these Dominic, great job. Thank you for another great video guys.

TheNetsrac

Estes model rocket engines have a ceramic nozzle and solid fuel in a cardboard tube all they need is an ignition source and are about the right size to fit in a shot shell just a thought.

They worked a lot better than I expected after the previous 3D printed tests!

I'm loving the 70s Sci fi music from UFO I think it is 👽👽👽

Woohoo I'm glad they worked as well as they did but I bet the ones that shattered were the ones I didn't anneal. And im glad I didn't cause another wildfire in California.

Interesting idea. I wonder what other materials you could make these out of. Obviously most wouldn't be as easy as plastic slugs from 3D printers, but it would be interesting to see other light materials that are stronger being used to make slugs like this. I'm thinking the kind of things you wouldn't normally make slugs out of (graphite, fiber glass, etc).
