My Cage "Classic" 07/17/2008

I recently heard someone say "Adult Animation in America isn't about the animation. It's only adult due to the writing". Any thoughts on that?

My daughter loves Helluva Boss.

I'll ask Mel. -Ed

Yeah. I was thinking it looked like some kind of mouse, but in most of the other characters, the ears are higher on the head, like up in the hairline. But you're probably right, and I'm just being a kibitzer: D

Looks like a field mouse to me. :)

I'm curious what animal the waitress in the first panel with the very human ears is?

Jon Benson

That definition pretty much defines almost any art form, animation, music, books, toys... Oddly, animated entertainment, as attractive as it is to children, was originally made mostly for adult audiences, to keep them quiet before the actual movie started. So, maybe there is no difference after all...

Jon Benson

I think you're onto something: they could redub a Simpsons episode with G-rated dialog and it would probably look the same...but shows like Family Guy and South Park, nah; the animation on those shows have plenty of gross/edgy/disgusting/sexual scenes.

There are a few shots from "Helluva Boss" that I really can't see getting approval on, say, Nick Jr.

Rex reminds me of kids who declare "First is the worst" when they lose the race but "Zero is the hero" when they win.

Stephen Gilberg

The same thing could be said about childrens animation as well? If ya make a series with the same visuals as a show for 3 year olds, but ya turn the writing on it's head and make it dark, then it's suddenly adult. Or in general, the meaning behind the work is what decides who it's aimed for, not the superficials

For sure. Just about every show, for every audience, benefits from better animation, voice work, and production overall.

VGR

From the little I've seen, yes.
