"Prelude to Ecstasy" - The Last Dinner Party *FULL ALBUM REACTION*

Comments

This one's for my catholic trauma queer girlies so let me just expand a little bit more on it (vs. Preacher's Daughter which to me rings more protestant trauma): The most important song on this album to me is Mirror where essentially Abigail falls into the martyrdom section of religious guilt. She's a mirror. Worthless without our gaze and exists so that we can take a pretty piece of her shattered soul to fix our own by reliving and healing our trauma through her music. That's why she says she's worthless these days without crying. Killing herself at the piano composing is all she can do, and through it she hopes for some kind of absolution. After all, if all you can focus on is the negative impact of your trauma over and over again eventually you'll drown so far you can't return from it. In this way the lack of "true" emotion in some of the songs hit so eerily because they'll only hit you as hard as you relate to the song— after all, she's just a mirror. This is one of my favorite albums and will definitely be in my Spotify wrapped this year and I'd invite you to revisit the album again at some other point maybe with this lens in mind. There are also aspects of the Church/Medieval art that come into play as well (such as the imagery of virginal maidens lying with dangerous creatures in their laps, taming them and to show off how pure and incredible they are used in "Portrait of a Dead Girl" or the imagery conveyed by the words "Lady of Mercy" an iteration of the Virgin Mary with her cloak expanded to protect her flock (sometimes from arrows if the painter is feeling dramatic)). Lyrically this album is so rich but I definitely think it requires the knowledge and study that usually comes with being involved with the Catholic Church and the deconstruction of the trauma that comes with it. Anyways lol love your content! Had so much fun watching you react to this album.

You gotta listen to more Talking Heads even if it's just on your own, they are iconique. Once in a Lifetime is the best track imo.
