Here is my first viewing of the Lemonade film from Beyoncé and I can confidently say that it was a breathtaking achievement in taking an album and creating a fleshed out visual around it. I can only imagine what kind of experience it was seeing this in theatres with the huge screen and speaker GOD! Beyoncé never fails to impress me but no what do we hit next? Bey-Chella? However having said that, I do wish you paid a bit more attention to the poetry by warsan shire (a somali poet) as it is pivotal to the story Beyoncé is trying to convey and impact that the lemonade visual album had on the black community whilst reacting as i do believe it would’ve had a bigger impact/elevated your viewing experience and understanding of why this changed our lives. 🫶🏽

And when has anyone ever caught every little detail on their first listen/watch through with content? Yes, he can try to pause and rewind where it makes sense to him, but if he did that every time, it would take him FOREVER to get through anything. “Stop talking during your own content” is such an insane thing to comment to any creator, let alone one you like enough to spend money on. She was talking about what girls learn from their mothers (how to wear disappointment in their face subtly, like a young girl would sneakily wear lipstick) then it jumped into a young man's perspective and the lessons he's learned about what life doesn't have to offer him. He said he didn't care if he lived or died until he met Barak Obama, then it occurred to him that he could be something. The president came from Chi-raq just like him. She continues the theme later before Love drought, asking Jay Z why he believes he doesn't deserve love.

It will make you appreciate the way she arranged the songs for the live performance that much more. Also I suggest maybe reading a bit about the homecoming performance before watching. Just to understand why it’s called Homecoming. The HBCU marching bands and what it’s all about to celebrate at one of the universities that takes a marching band performance to a whole other out of this world level. The way she has the step line, the marching and dancers, the drum line..it’s just. Beyond words. But first self titled…and please do the trilogy at some point (4:44 and Everything is Love).

2024-01-12 15:24:14 +0000 UTCAs some people have mentioned… No, this did not play in theaters. if i remember correctly it premiered for the first time on HBO with very little promotion… and then the only way you could watch was on Tidal, Jay-Z’s streaming platform (right?). it was 2016 so apple music streaming was not a thing… You could only buy the album or subscribe to Tidal. Lemonade was not released on spotify for YEARS. it’s so hard to imagine, album releases and streaming culture have changed so much in the last decade.

It's kind of a hard one to react to because there is just so much going on with the poetry, music, and visuals, so having to give up some of your attention to us must be distracting! It’s a journey through the discover of betrayal and processing that and healing. For example, 6 Inch is meant to represent Beyoncé running away from the pain and emptiness by pouring herself into her work. Something Jay also touches upon in 4:44. “she work for the money”

The DISSECT podcast also did "Black is King" and it's really helpful to listen because there's sooooo much imagery and references to African traditions that I was unaware of. That podcast is so helpful in giving more info so you can fully appreciate the efforts that B goes to when creating her art.

She secretly filmed it in Brazil. And knowing Beyoncé was in this mental place before she discovered the infidelity makes it so much more powerful. Feedback per Troy’s request:: Every person included in the film as an image or audio is so purposeful: The mothers of lost black children (with photos of their children); prominent black women featured throughout; and the poetry and speech excerpts from activists. Also many of the images of children are Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s kids or home videos of their families while they themselves were growing up. For example, during “daddy lessons” the video of the dad and daughter on the couch are Beyonce and her father Matthew during her childhood. Some of my favorite images also come at the end: the car sinking alludes to Hurricane Katrina, many locals then sought shelter in the Saints Football stadium. Also the black boy dancing in the hoodie in front of the police that surrender to him at the end. All are very purposeful and document portions of the black American experience.

You get to see how hard she works and all that goes into her performances. I also would recommend listening to the album "The Gift" that she worked on as well as the Black is King film on Disney + that accompanies it (you don't have to watch that anytime soon, just a future recommendation if you ever want to look at another visual film). It's pretty spectacular.

I rewatched it recently and just watched the audience reactions and they were all just watching in amazement. Hands down the best live performer of our time. In terms of videos theres so many: Renaissance Concert Film (When you can stream it) All of the music videos for her self titled album Homecoming Stevie Wonder Tribute MTV VMA 19 minute long performance of her self titled album "Be Alive" Academy Award Live Performance There's so much else around what is going on in her life around the time of all these different performances. Truly the greatest living entertainer. Her performances are truly the best. She is the only artist where her live performances are always better than the studio versions.

It breaks down a lot of the imagery (including the plantation that is the background for many of the scenes and the NOLA scenes, which has a lot of references to hurricane Katrina, which devastated many black communities there, and the response/ aftermath… for instance with the stadium)

My mom and I are huge Prince fans, so we were having a memorial celebration (drinking purple liquor and watching Purple Rain) and I stopped the movie and made her watch the Lemonade premiere with me on HBO. It was so special to get to share the artist of my lifetime with her while also mourning hers.

The setlist from that concert is mainly made from these two albums but in a way that you could miss a detail or a note of perfection if you have no clue what is it. Still, it would still be a Queen Bey concert and for sure you would be entertained FOR SURE.
