Sagefreke did a good job describing the PSX game. It’s definitely a parallel story with a bunch of similarities and differences. Although the stories are mutually exclusive in some ways, I think they’re supposed to be equally canon as the anime.
From what I understand, the creators drew lots of inspiration from classic Macintosh computers back in the day. (The episode titles are voiced using one of the synthesized voices from a Macintosh.) Unlike modern Macs, which can’t be upgraded by your average person, back then you could pop out your Macintosh’s processor and put a faster one in. Or failing that, companies would come up with all sorts of strange technical ways to upgrade your system.
Finally, I’d love to see you react to the intro and outro if you can find them. The intro especially.

I can't remember who said it, but the show does a good job of hiding the answers in plain sight. It can be extremely confusing at first, but once everything starts to click it makes so much sense.

Dont worry. Im not expecting to understand this anime myself and it's my second watch. You're doing well tho!
It does look like people are not really connected in the real world, even though they say just the opposite.
A little titbit of info that i think is not explained: the color smudges in the shadows can apparently be thought as symbolising the influence of the wired in the world.

So the PSX game is an interesting one. It's basically a visual novel/adventure game with little cutscenes, audio and text logs which you navigate through on a little computer. The game was never officially localized, but a fantranslation and "port" of sorts to a webpage was released at https://laingame.net/. Could be neat to make a video on once you finish the series, it's technically a parallel/alternate take on the setting and themes of the anime alongside the other "serial experiment", a short oneshot manga called "The Nightmare of Fabrication" which I would also highly recommend!
