Auto Part Shopping

Development for Honcho lost about two weeks progress as we spent a lot of time driving round Europe visiting family. With that consideration, I still think we managed to get some good output from the month and I just want to thank everyone for their patience during this period.

This discord was able to entertain itself during our absence.

In the world of Honcho, players can find vehicle parts whilst about their travels, but they'll also be able to buy replacement parts. Players can purchase stock parts from the auto parts dealerships found within towns and second-hand parts from the auto parts dealerships found along routes.

Stock Parts Shop

The stock parts shop spawns into the town environments. Towns are the hub areas who's layout remains consistent throughout the save file. Having a store the player can consistently visit means we need to be restrictive on the parts being sold here. If the town shops sold all the best rolled parts, what would be the reason for exploring the world?

As such, the parts shop that spawns in the town is restricted to selling stock parts, and the low tier maintenance tools. This provides players with a reliable way to keep their car running, and gives them access to all core stock parts should they need it. Players can also sell any loot they find here.

Second-Hand Parts Shop

For more exciting part purchases, players will want to embark on generated routes marked with the "Parts shop along route" attribute. These routes will spawn a second-hand part shop along them.

The second-hand part shop generates far more exotic parts for players to purchase, though the downside is that these parts will also come with damage and rust afflictions that will need to be addressed, should they want the full potential of the part. Parts sold here may also contain rare unique attributes.

Below we can see the vendor has a E05A engine in store, which doesn't come stock on the Daizo T360. It's stats look generally worse than the AK250E we have installed right now, but we may be surprised by the performance increase should we choose to purchase and repair this engine.

Holding Multiple Items

Another change I've made to the internal build is allowing players to carry up to five objects in their hands at once. There's an outfit system for the player character in the game I'm yet to go into but this also opens the possibility for clothing to provide more carry capacity. I've also made the change to allow players to open doors while holding items.

I've implemented "Kusahiro" (lit. weed hero), rather than barn finds. Kusahiro refers to abandoned vehicles found in the overgrowth of Japan. The term is used colloquially to refer to the cars as these forgotten heroes and is commonly used in Japanese car culture for enthusiasts looking to take photos or even a cheeky restoration project. Kusahiro feels more culturally authentic to the Japanese setting but I also think it adds a unique charm to the game. Players can find these abandoned cars along routes marked with "Kusahiro spotted along route".

Is there any plan for barn finds for getting parts / vehicles you can purchase the contents of a location and acquire anything at the location but everything is random including the condition of the parts and the parts themselves along with any vehicles that may spawn there It would be a similar mechanic to what’s in “Car Mechanic Simulator”

All well thank you!

This is a really cool way to incentivize exploration. Hope the family's doing well!
