Yes, many times the words are simply nessesary to make sense of visuals. I like this example from "Making Comic" were words explain the meaning: https://sta.sh/02a6d74zf0wg Or...it can simply mean that my expressions are not as good as they should be ;-)

The inks really do serve as good teasers. They give you an idea, the beginning framework to begin to imagine what is going on. But without the words... The story stands still. We can see the confrontation. Lullaby is upset. Tempest is angry. Thistle... seems to be taking the role of defensive mediator. Though I'm not certain on that. In pane 3 she seems to be reaching for understanding, but in pane 4 she seems to be defending her position (whatever that may be). Though sometimes the expression I read on the characters changes between the inks and the colored copy. The subtleties that are reinforced, mean everything and can completely change the meaning of the expression. It seems like about a third of the time, my understanding of the character's expressions changes between the inks and the colored version.
