New variables in Shattered: points and points

«Come here, sexy, we have all night ahead of us».

Hello. Today I want to talk about some new mechanics that I'm gonna introduce in v0.5. Initially I wanted to let Blake earn money to spend on nice things, but this got delayed, so instead of three new variables we're gonna get two, and both of those are points. I'll just call them what they are: points of bisexuality and points of bimbofication.

They probably don't need much explanation, so I'll be brief: at this point of the story Blake's sexuality is pretty much established. But a lot of people say that they don't want to get cut from the content entirely, and it's somewhat weird that Blake can't swing both sides. It's true, and that's why I introduce those points. The way you get them is pretty easy: if your Blake's say, straight, thinking about other men and letting them flirt with you raises Blake's bisexuality. And vice versa, gay Blake might finds himself interested in some of the women, and it will affect his points as well. Now, I do realise that's not how it works in real life, but I couldn't introduce that mechanic in the first place because of the way I calculate it. It's also worth noting that it won't help you to drop off your chosen route, so it will only affect side events, and other characters will still consider Blake to be on one of the sides.

Bimbo points are a little bit more interesting. As you probably noticed, Blake grows more and more comfortable with that whole sex thing, and entertains the idea of giving in completely. Not all sex related stuff in the world of Shattered, however, is based on mutual pleasure and dignity, and some characters could see Blake as no more than a talking sex doll. Getting Blake into situations that degrade him as a person and reduce him to an instrument of sexual satisfaction for other people turns him into a bimbo. For example, if Blake rides in a metro train and notices that someone is trying to grope him, he can walk away or slap the offender, or stand still and let him do the job. The latter will give him a bimbo point. Eventually after getting too many points Blake's personality will start to change drastically and irreversibly. This, of course, is a pretty big change, so please don't be angry at me for making it a very slow process. Chances are you won't notice any difference in the next few versions, but changes like that don't happen overnight, and I'm still not entirely sure I can even write a convincing trail of thoughts for bimbo-Blake. We'll see. Rewiring Blake's personality will affect not only him, but the other people too. Some of them might like his new character a little more, and for some it's gonna be another way around. It's a pretty big task.

So this is it. Stay tuned, I'll show you another new character tomorrow. Have a nice day!

New variables in Shattered: points and points

Comments

There are checks that don't just use gay > straight, but there are a lot that do too, and many of the ones that use other flags get it wrong as well. While changing the old conditions might need new saves (I'd have to test, it, Renpy can be *very* good at keeping saves compatible sometimes, others it's useless), I don't see why doing the tests better in new content would, we already have the variables tracking choices made to this point. And I don't use Discord much, message boards have always been more my speed than chatrooms. Most of what I use Discord for is lurking to see pictures that are posted there.

You're making several wrong assumptions here. First, thinking that he's not into women isn't calculated solely on points, it uses several other true/false variables, some of which have more weight than the others. Blake could consider himself gay even if he has more straight points. Second, this whole situation is mostly tied to the story progression, and the way Blake's personality opens up to new possibilities. I'm not «papering over» anything, it's more of a plot device, which you will see right at the start of v0.5. And third, while I do think that I could've handled those points better, changing them now in any significant way is pointless, because it would mean deleting the progress for every single player and ask them to play the game all over again. It's something nobody will appreciate. By the way, do you use Discord? We have a channel and I would love you to join us for those discussions.

And if someone has, say, 3 gay and 3 straight points but no bi points? You look at just about any list of 'things programmers shouldn't do' and having two variables that mean the same thing is likely to be on it. The checks for 'gay > straight' are a problem that should be fixed, not papered over like that. Fixing problems rather than working around them is also likely to be on lists like that. Blake thinking 'I'm not into women' should be if he has no (or very low) straight points, not slightly less straight points than gay points.

Wild Bill

No, because gay and straight points are interchangeable in Shattered's code. Meaning that if you have more gay points than straight ones, you won't get any straight content at all. So the bisexual content isn't there, it's strictly divided, unless you exploit some loophole. And bisexual points won't make anything complicated, it will just let me add another check for some events, that's all.

Yeda Games

How am I not taking people who don't want gay content into consideration? They will simply not get gay points, only straight. This doesn't change that Blake being bisexual is already covered by having both gay and straight points. Adding a third variable for something already covered is a bad idea and is just making things more complicated for no good reason. I'm a programmer, and I think you'll regret it.

Wild Bill

You have to take into consideration the fact that some people don't want to see gay (or straight) content at all. Blake's attraction points until this moment were used exactly for that reason: to lock Blake on a specific path, but now is a good time to open possibilities for people who enjoy bisexual content.

Yeda Games

I don't think bisexual points sound like a good idea *at all*. You already *have* points for Blake's attraction to men and women, having both of those makes him bisexual. Confusing things with a third variable is a terrible idea.
