Sal and Jason, from the archives

I was digging through my uncompleted stuff since I was looking for something else specific, but I found this along the way. It's something I didn't finish from... 2014? Yeah, I only colored in the girl, i sorry

My wife likes the Sal/Jason pairing more than I do (probably running off the fumes of It's Walky!), so I don't have much of these two drawn on my own time.

There should really be an unfinished tag.

Honestly, Sal and Jason never quite worked for me even in It's Walky!. Jason being a scold is a fun dynamic when Joyce and Walky and Mike are meaningfully less mature than him, but Jason and Sal as the "parents" of the group meant that what should be a relationship of equals constantly put Sal on the backfoot, which mostly just seemed to make her miserable, and in turn make Jason miserable when she wouldn't change for him. Dumbing of Age fixes a fair deal of this--for starters, it textualizes their power imbalance, and makes Sal an active participant in it. She needs something from Jason, he's not just weirdly glued to her for no reason. It also makes Jason shit on purpose rather than pretending he has a point. Like with Danny, the other Sal love interest that doesn't work, Dumbing of Age starts by deconstructing the worst possible version of this guy, so it can then bring him to his lowest point and force him to change into someone who could plausibly be worth knowing. But the problem is even once Jason goes through this process he's still a bad fit for Sal. For one, they now have this textually awful history as a loadstone around their necks. But also he's just...never gonna be the kind of adventurous personality Sal needs. Danny, for all his dorkiness, is open to new experiences. He can match Sal for interest in music and athleticism. Jason's just not that guy. Even as he gets softer and more self-aware, he's still gonna be kind of snarky and rigid. Ruth is a much better fit for him.

Man, the unrated cut of Take On Me really went in a different direction.
