Forget the Past

Dear Insane Children,

Joey's sent along a new illustration of a playground area in Wonderland where Alice might forget her troubles. Joey says of this image...

...where kids play and forget all their unhappy memories, maybe we could use this for one stage in which Alice is trying to forget the death of her family. Actually I am thinking, maybe at the beginning of the game, Alice wandering in her wonderland in order to find her sister, she goes between her area and the asylum, she totally forgets she was put in the asylum, so the asylum becomes a horror place she gets stuck in from time to time...

There is a fine balance to find between recollection of painful events and denial of those events happening in the first place. Too much dwelling on trauma can lead to a downward spiral of negative emotions. Neuroscience has shown that visualization of an event or action plays back in the mind as powerfully as the actual experience or action itself. The mind is unable to recognize the temporal difference (this thing happened in the past and isn't actually happening right now) and the body reacts as if the trauma was real and present.

People trapped in PTSD recall their trauma(s) over and over again, feeling out of control, like a passenger aboard a run-away roller-coaster. In this case, the mind's natural function of replaying a "teachable moment" (from burning one's hand on the stove to witnessing the death of a loved one) never reaches its conclusion. That conclusion should be the acceptance of the event and subsequent understanding of the lesson contained within.

The mind is asking, "How do I survive this and avoid it happening again in the future?"

"Don't touch the hot stove!" Is easy and self-contained because we personally control and understand the general parameters. But the trauma caused by a caretaker placing a child's hand on a hot stove - the questions, doubts, and emotions generated by such an experience are not self contained - nor easy to understand.

"Why?" is the primary question for many who suffer from PTSD. The inability to find an answer powerful enough to overcome the trauma is at the center of why the trauma persists.

When that "why" cannot be answered... Many would prefer escape - through drinking, drugs, or death - to being trapped in the never-ending state of trauma. And areas such as the one presented by Joey are a perfect example of the child's version of blissful unawareness in a "happy place."

Meanwhile over in Alex's happy place...

Progress is being made on the Chaos Coin design.

I like the Cheshire Cat "head" side and think this might be near to finished. I'm not so sure about the Chaos Symbol side - mainly because it departs completely from the design we've been working with so far - the design found in the Chaos Necklace, t-shirts, and even on my boat, tattoo, etc. Do I now need to get all those things redesigned?! I LIKE my tattoo!

Anyway, I've asked Alex to look at reverting this to the design we've been using. And, if white space is a problem, consider moving the Solve et Coagula to the Chaos side of the coin (in the center of the symbol).

That brings us to the embroidered patches...

The factory's confirmed that they are producing the patches and expect to have them finished by end of this month (end of May 2018). As outlined before, we then need to send them to Shenzhen, then out to customers. This would put delivery date to your mailbox (assuming everything stays on schedule) around end of June. Fingers crossed.

Final note... of of this writing we're at 1,246 Patrons heading towards our goal of 2000. If you want to unlock the Chaos Coin goal sooner, please consider spreading the word of our efforts via your social media channels. Feel free to re-post the art we've created and the coin designs. Get your friends and family to join our insane asylum! The more the madder :)

Somehow I missed seeing this update till now ... I like the Cheshire side but I agree the fangs need to be spaced out a bit more. Need to see a rough color version to see everything properly first. Also, earring is on the wrong side right? ...I could be wrong. The back side is a definite no... looks like a snowflake now but I much prefer the one with a heart <3 Looks like Martin needs to start another voting survey about the back side of the coin :D (Go team Hearts)

The more I look at Chesh, the more I think the roundness of the face, without help from color, a body, or ears, looks too human. This is also the first I've seen Chesh with canines and coupled with the roundness reminds me more of a vampire than a cat. However, I love the thought of Chesh having them. I acknowledge you're not going for realism, and it's no further of a departure from "real" than the squared off Cheshire dentition, but the canines on most animals, cats included, are further from primary incisors and cats have fairly notable lower canines. Chaos side needs to find some middle ground between the two designs and the symbol should be like your tattoo, merch, etc.

The Cheshire side of the coin is amazing. Brilliant. The chaos side on the other hand feels dumb down. I can barely recognize it. For sure it needs to move back in the direction of the earlier design which while crowded (an issue that could be solved with a good color palette) was much more suitable as an Alice piece and more fitting to be on the back side of the coin. Love the Artwork. Beautiful.

To me, I'm getting Pleasure Island vibes from this playground idea (although Pinnochio was published a few decades after the fire). If Alice comes to the Playground area of Wonderland to look for Lizzie, it'd be interesting to see things related to Lizzie, the things she liked, and games and things she and Alice did together. Maybe even a fake (doll?) Lizzie too...

Hi guys! Longtime patron, first time commenter. I think the coin is a great idea, both as a collector’s item and as an in-game easter egg. As soon as I’m able, I’m going to up my pledge in order to get the coin. Wanted to give my 2 cents in regards to the coin design. Love the cat side! It’s a great design. As for the opposite side, I feel like the heart overpowers the chaos symbol in the original design. Chaos doesn’t stand out as much as it should, but the newer design is a bit lacking and plain. I agree with you American that it doesn’t look enough like the chaos symbol. If the general consensus is to go with the original design, might I suggest bringing the chaos symbol forward? Right now it seems to sit behind the heart and that may be why it feels (to me) that the heart overpowers the chaos symbol. Anyway, that’s just my opinion. Keep up the good work!

Drucilla Shultz

Looks great! ^_^

I definitely adore the artwork with the heart... It was gothic, gorgeous, and was the design that got me to donate<3

Love the playground idea area for the game! I like that her hair is black in this pic too :) The Cheshire side of the coin is cool except I do agree with the person who said the fangs look too close to the center. I don't like the chaos side. The old design was way better it just needed some extra detail taken out.

That artwork looks so beautiful! For the coin I prefer the last design with the heart because I associate that more with Alice. I like the idea of the Cheshire cat face on the coin but I would say this design is a bit busy with so many lines. It took my eyes a little while to focus to take in properly that is was the cat. But great work so far and thanks for all your efforts!

Concerning the chaos coin, the "cheshire" side is perfect in my opinion. However, the "chaos" side is a bit too thick. The necklace, shirt and apparently tattoo designs would better match the overall aesthetic an not just be a big blob to fill in space. (sorry if that last bit sounds harsh, but that is my honest opinion). Anyway keep up the good work and looking forward to all the awesomeness that alice asylum is going to contain.

Love the design of the coin. Even though the chaos symbol looks really cool with more body to it, I would miss the intertwined heart which of course is iconic for Alice.

Love the image and Joeys description of it. It's really, really beautiful and brings a comforting warmth. So thnk you for that <3 Secondly, thank you for writing this. It is so very true. The unanswered "why" is the most difficult part to move past from, because a good enough reason can justify the pain and make it easier to live with. The pointlessness of our suffering is hard, if not impossible, to live with (though we manage, somehow). I think this is something a lot of people will connect with, and that connection for me personally, can be the difference between a decent game and an experience that leaves an impact. Unto the Chaos coin! I like the Cheshire side, and I'm excited to see a more finished version of it. As for the Chaos side, I'm not sure. It looks kinda cool, but isn't really.. "our style". It's too broad and chunky/clumsy. Put on a diet to sim it down, and I think it would be good. If there is some empty spaces, it can be filled up with vines like the Cheshire side (+ makes it "our style" again).

The chaos symbol is hard to recognise in this design. The earlier, more open design suggests an impact/explosion and the multi-directionality of a compass without a needle; this looks like something a boy scout would wear on his sleeve

June 1st.

I don't see the issue with white space; Is smooth surface more costly than having raised designs? The previous concepts with the Chaos Symbol were far better in my eyes, even if the heart would have to be nixed. That said, the Chaos Symbol necklaces as well as the art shown on your Patreon page itself seem to show the a much larger blank space inside the the ring of the Chaos symbol itself. So, could the heart not be placed in the center of the symbol instead? The intertwining design was interesting, but (not knowing the particular reason for the heart) if it is primarily included for the sake of representation, it seems like it could just as well be placed at the center of the Chaos Symbol and effectively be the heart of Chaos, or a Heart being consumed/surrounded by Chaos.

Love the Cheshire cat artwork -expect the fangs, which looks a bit odd- shape wise- speaking. And ya, the Chaos symbol doesn't look right to me as well XD.

i'm not fond of the new chaos side, but i was a fan of the first one so lol, the Doll level looks great cant wait to see more

re Cheshire..... should the K9s not be further out? so 4 or 6 in the middle rather than 2. Also agreed this version of the Chaos symbol is not right. ^_^

Eh?...but that's pretty much exactly Chesh's face since the start https://static.gamespot.com/uploads/original/mig/6/3/7/0/1696370-627448_20110421_003.jpg

Love the cat face! The artwork and ideas around it are just superb

Man, I LOVE that coin will have Cheshire face on it!!!! And story premise is great! Keep on doing great work!!!

As someone who's studying psychology & criminology in university, reading about these themes and their relation to the game's concepts is amazing. Reminds me of why I fell in love with the first two.

I'm loving the idea you have for the first level and how you choose to present the idea of innocence shadowing chaos. Also your understanding of PTSD is spot on and I bet it's going to make the game just that more enjoyable. The art work dipicting the first level is brilliant, I also want to point out the concept of the asylum being part of the game as well. From going back and forth into realit and alice not remembering even being put in the asylum adds to the horror we have come to love with the alice games. Great idea, I really hope you stick to it. The coin is looking kickass. Love the cheshire cat face. Looks amazing, however like you said I don't think the way Alex has drawn up the chaos symbol matches your vision or what we are looking for. It's way too different and the whole desin does negatively effect what we have come to love as the chaos symbol. I say keep it to basics. Not everything has to be that extra. Great job guys! Always happy to see your progress!

I’m not really a fan of the cat. It’s too close to the gremlins with the tribal lines. And I really do not like the chaos symbol. I like the original. And love the way it looks with the heart around it.

I love the doll looking level, oh that image really further excites me about the reality of the game truly making it into our hands in the future. I do miss the heart a bit but I love the coin, I do agree with designing the chaos symbol closer to what has been shown regularly so far. Jazzed to hear patch news, thanks again to you and the artists for your efforts :).

As someone who has worked in mental health during my many years in the military, I'm especially loving this post. :)

I think the Cheshire Cat looks good but if you go to the other chaos design I feel the cat needs to go to a more rounded design instead of the tribal with the strait edges. As for the game. even though it’s becoming common in video games now, I think the game needs a hub world that is her happy place where you can upgrade weapons ,spend currency, warp to the different areas you’ve already completed to collect missing items and just ready yourself for what’s next. OR what if the happy place is actually a lie and her trying to overcome her past just fuels the creatures that lurk behind false smiles, almost like Hansel and Gretel’s witch, a place where you can turn your back but any more then a second and you’re done. Maybe an explanation as to why she can’t trust anything in the real world

So the funds come out on the 1st of each month. If the 2,000 mark hits say the end of June would we have to be the $35 tier on June 1st for it to count? Or just be $35 before the mark hits?

I really love the Cheshire design. I also really liked the heart design though.

So this will be the denial stage. It looks absolutely beautiful. I Can't wait to see what you have in store for anger, sorrow, depression, and aceptence. Also I like the call back to Dr.bumby. "forget it Alice". Wait a muinet, are you saying Dr. Bumby be back in asylum?

Lucas Severin

The art looks great! and I like the rose on the top left corner, are the rose petals indicate health bar? If so I think it's a great idea

Wow I love the art! I love all the pink and how pretty it is definitely something I hope makes it into the game! I really hope we get some play time in the asylum because that was one of my favorite parts in AMR because it was so eerie💘 Also umbrella double jump anyone??????

I LOVE THIS IDEA!

Nice, like the ideas, on the coin, I love the cheshire cat side, but preferred the heart and chaos of the first round.

We've explained before that there is a way to "hack" the system and get the coin at the minimum required pledge. Simply change your pledge to $35 when you see we've hit the goal. Then, after the pledges for that month are processed and you've been charged $35, move your pledge back to wherever you're comfortable (or even cancel your pledge completely). Obviously, we'd like if you pledged more, since your support is what funds our efforts towards art, design, story, etc. But if you want the coin for the cheapest possible price, that's the way to do it.

American McGee

These designs and thoughts are wonderful. The pins in the doll are reminiscent to me of Tim Burton's the pin cushion queen. I love your bluntness in talking about the realities of mental disorders/illnesses/injuries, and the analogies you use to explain them. I like the idea of this technically being the first intro we have to the mad doll children before they're entirely corrupted. Maybe one of the dolls is Alice's friend and then becomes Bitch Baby? Great work all around. Excited for the work done on coins and patches.

Sarah Heist

I have a doubt. Right now I'm not in a very good situation so I can't update my pledge. But if I updated when we reached 2000 patreons, would I be able to get a coin? Or I needed to already have a 35 plus pledge to be eligible? Do you have in mind what the price for the club is going to be at Mysterious?

Priscila Nosoma

"... the asylum becomes a horror place she gets stuck in from time to time...". In AMA, we never see Alice in the real world, but we know from the doctor's casebook that she was periodically conscious. I've always pictured her spending most of her time in Wonderland, but if she dies in Wonderland, she falls into hell for a while, before managing to return to life; "hell", for her, is seeing the asylum. In other words, dying in Wonderland forces her to wake up for a while, with all the pain that that entails. Sounds like Joey has been thinking along the same lines!

Rosuav

Looking good with Cheshire in the coin!

Jay Bird

The art!!! So breathtaking!

Can't wait for the patches
