Maps of Meaning (and Chaos)

Dear Insane Children,

Here in China we're entering proper spring and it's absolutely beautiful! We just had a few days off as a result of a national holiday - Labor Day - which is associated with the start of spring and is also a celebration of workers. Hence getting a few days off!

As a result we don't have a ton to update you on but I'll do a quick rundown on what little there is...

First up, Joey sends along a concept image for the layout of Wonderland per the previously discussed 'solar system' or 'atomic orbit' model. In connection with this I am also working on an 8-part narrative outline which includes 8 scenes per act. Lots of numerology and alchemy subtext being layered into this :)

Let me know in the comments below what you think of the image and the layout concept.

As we're at the start of a new month a couple of housekeeping bits for rewards...

3x35 backers - art print process update - we're working with Backerkit.com to test a new system whereby we can connect Backerkit to Patreon in order to help with management of pledges and rewards. For those of you in the 3x35 tier, please be patient just a little while longer - once the connection between the platforms is sorted you'll receive notice and be guided through a process where you can select your art print, provide shipping details, etc. Yay!

Those of you waiting on Embroidered Patches - the samples got made and art for the packaging is done - just waiting on full-scale production to start. That was delayed by Yan traveling and then Labor Day. We should start to see movement on that this week and early next week. Will keep everyone updated here.

Martin and I rearranged the live stream studio. I felt it was time we showed something more than just a boring black background where Martin and I normally sit.

We're hosting another live stream tomorrow morning (9AM Hong Kong Time, Friday - 6PM PST, Thursday). So SET A REMINDER over on YouTube. While you're there, make sure you are subscribed to the channel and that you've ticked the "bell icon" so you'll be notified whenever we go live.

We'll answer your questions and comments from Patreon - so if you have any... be sure to leave them below!

From Shanghai with Love,

Maps of Meaning (and Chaos)

Comments

Have a nice vacation! I'd totally watch Martin play God of War (maybe not live though).

Make Nine Inch Nails great again

I forget, but I believe it was mentioned once or twice that the "Chaos Core" at the center of Wonderland was caused by a meteor impact, representing the house fire (at least, that's the proposed idea so far in development)? If that's the case, it would be pretty interesting to see parallels or references to astronomical events around the time Asylum takes place (the latest being when it takes place, obviously, with the most likely referenced events being ones that occurred between Alice's birth and then). Some examples, which I won't go in depth on so as to keep this comment (relatively) short, might be the Carrington event, a powerful solar storm in 1859, or Donati's Comet/Comet Donati, first observed in 1858 and the first comet to be photographed. There are also plenty of other non-astronomical historical events that influenced Alice's world, both real and Wonderful (in the fields of astronomy, medicine, psychiatry/psychology, technology, etc). So sorry for making this comment long again, but in my opinion, including references like these makes the game feel much more solid and impressive to me.

I have just been catching up on the stream I missed earlier today... The underwater level on Alice Madness Returns was very good! Because usually you swim in water themed game levels but in AMR it's fully explorable and I think that it really worked well. It kept Wonderland mysterious and felt a little more real because even though she was underwater, she wasn't swimming. I imagine myself being Alice and experiencing that.... I hope that all made sense.. The mini game HMS Gryphon was basic but very cool. I loved trying to get the trophy for that mini game!

I love that your games have a deep meaning and the chaos, solar system thing is awesome and it will definetely work

Love the look and idea of the map and the floating islands. Can't wait to see how we move from island to island.

This is a pretty cool idea with Lands being floating Isles for you to venture off to. But I do have to question if we can ever go back to those lands? When you're going through Grief don't you sometimes go back and forth with your emotions, It just makes me question if Alice Asylum will be more open world and possibly more exploration. Don't know if you guys are still up for that idea, But so far it still looks beautiful.

Hey you guys, really digging the cosmic stages of Alice's sanity. :) I recently tried out the first Alice game and really like how the map reveals itself as you get further. Perhaps in Asylum we could cover the rings in soot/ashes before the player unlocks the location? :)

As I said in the livestream I love the orbit concept. It would be one of a kind and absolutely stunning, especially if the different parts are visible and interactive throughout the whole game. I'm so excited to see all the ideas from the last months come together. This better happen, we're watching you EA!

Love the atom aspect, thought about the center part. I think it would be an idea to have her start at the center in the burning house with the chaos of the rings around it. By gaining abilities control of the rings could be had, but also have a central hub area if needed.

Hey guys! Its awesome to hear your enjoying the first few days a sprint! We are also enjoying the nice weather here in canada. I'm loving the concept of the 'atomic map' idea and cannot wait to see the amazing things you are bringing to the new game! I actually really missed the idea of a map lay out of the levels, which was absent in madness returns, but so happy to see you bring it back for the new one! I'm so excited to get those patches as well. I'm going to sew them on a baby blanket since my daughters name is alice and I'm going for a Wonderland theme for her room. Very great work! Can't wait to see more of it, keep up the hard work!

Oh, wow. I love the concept. Honestly it is very unique. I don't know anyone who has done it before.

Nice new studio! Also like the way the "atom" world is coming along, at this stage it's hard to visualize to me but I'm sure once it comes into being it will be beautiful! A bit of a random request here, but as a animal Iover, I would love to hear about some of the wildlife you encounter in your travels and sailing American! ❤️

Looks great. I'll just say that with out the monologue.

I'm such a fan. I love the idea of the motion of the released upstairs orbits after each stage. To combine the sol solar/atomic bit: when the stage gets released, the rings rotate so that whatever stage you're currently on has a the previous levels passing though the sky at timed intervals related to the distance/size of rings. Would also the levels get shorter as progress continues? Or longer as a paradox to the amount of work it takes to get to the core of a person/trauma? Great work as always. Blessed be. (Happy belated Beltane)

Hello, guys! I love this idea, visually it has the potential to look really cool. Is each of the 8 scenes / areas going to continue to fall in line with the stages of grieving? As far as the lands go, I like the idea of the red queen being anger, the mad hatter possibly being depression and maybe the caterpillar as acceptance since he always plays this almost all-knowing god-like role in most adaptations. Then Tweedledee and Tweedledum as bargaining. (Can you imagine having to bargain with those two?) Also, the levels in Alice: Madness Returns felt like they went on forever. The outfit change is awesome, scenery change is really cool but I got to this place where I was like: WHY am I STILL in ocean land? I don't usually post this long but last thing: thank you for the games you've made and trying to make this one happen. They have been a comfort to me as I really relate to Alice for a number of reasons; hoping to do a cosplay soon. So, thanks you for making these. Plus, it's hard to find artists that make the weird and macabre beautiful. (hence my giant crush on Marilyn Manson lol) So keep on creating!

Oh wow, what a cool idea! I love how each ring with it's designated island seems to "activate" or be "freed" as you complete each stage! I cannot wait to see what will lie in the center of it all! Keep being awesome and hope you had a great time with your time off! :D

Love the solar system thing!

I'll try to keep this concise. American, have you anything to share, or thoughts or plans for what is at the center of the rings? Is it dissolution, or reformation? Is it the collective unconscious? Does dissolution imply refining of the self, purifying of outside influences? Does coagulation imply designed reformation of self, choosing of influences? Perhaps the influences chosen are chosen as methods of self protection.

If I understand the concept art, these islands would be locked into place, and then freed via Alice's actions, and then they'd go into their orbits; would they be visible from within other realms? There's definitely an opportunity here for a striking (and very Wonderland) view of all these realms/orbits/floating islands passing around and overhead. In a way, it reminds me of first landing on the Halo and seeing the curve of the ring going up and away in the distance which filled me with wonder back then. Would the place with this lever be a central hub location you can return to for upgrades and perhaps talking with allies you've saved (a la Normandy in "Mass Effect", Firelink Shrine in "Dark Souls", etc)? Might be fun to have an area we can return to and track our progress.

Love the solar system layout idea ^-^ I'm curious about how the colour scheme will look with it

Ooh, I like your little studio. Neat. ^‿^ The layout of Wonderland image is pretty sweet. Would be cool to see as either a print or like a poster map that comes included with the retail game. 8-part narrative outline? Sounds like a yes to me. Can't wait to see how it works out. :) Yay live stream! T'was getting a little quiet this week. Glad to see there'll still be one. See you later tonight, Captain, Marty B. and a possible guest appearance from Lulu! (^▽^)ゞ

Before I get started here I would just like to say that you pronounced my name wrong last stream. You said "kay-lum" but it's meant to said as "kal-lum". I mean no disrespect I just wanted to clarify. Hmmm not much to comment on today but here we go... The new map looks nice, it is a lot like the cut scenes in madness returns which is a good call back. The idea that each one orbits after completion is interesting showing how they all work together in a perfect balance. Can't wait for the patches. See you at the stream. Bye

Really cool concept with the solar system! It implies that there should be order, since it is a system, and thus things are fucky, when they are out of said order. It also works well the stages of grief and having to align the areas, restore some sense and balance, before being able to progress. Gold coins being a collectible in the game also works really cool with this world layout, since it could look like a gold coin when in order. "Money makes the world go round", and money being one of Bumbys motivation for playing his part in the story. + it will look amazing! :D

The solar system idea seems really cool and unique, I think it’s a good idea, and 8 stages yay!

All sounds great!

I love the idea if the solar system type layout and I love the 8 being important to scenes and the story💘
