The Shape of Chaos

Dear Insane Children,

Stop! Before you read any further into today's update (which does contain some pretty amazing stuff)...

See the cover image for today's post? That's by our good friend Omri Koresh. He's doing amazing work for the Asylum project but he's also got a really beautiful art book project of his own over on IndieGogo.

Please consider supporting his efforts by backing HIS CAMPAIGN.

Why? Because it's a direct way of showing love for the artist who brings you this sort of gorgeous madness...

He says of this image...

"It's when the hatter is sad about his friends that were hurt because of the explosion in the lab. in my mind he of course blames Alice. In this image he's looking at the glass and thinks about how he was before the accident. His body is also mechanic of course, so he made himself higher, hence the old Book version vs the Game's version.

I think i'll call it "I'd like to forget what you did" as referring to Alice."

Omri's said he's interested in creating more of these story illustrations and I am encouraging him to do so. Can't wait to see what he produces next.

Of the Queen/mask image called "I survived the fire" he says...

"I thought that in the AMA game the queen is a disease on the world with tentacles. so i thought of making the new queen as young Alice, seeing the fire, constantly. because it's her guilt that's literally eating her alive.  and if the queen is being created in the asylum world, i think it fits."

Speaking of the structure and narrative of the world, I've been working with Joey on a world-map of the new Wonderland. Based on our initial chats she turned in this image:

Since then we've had a deeper chat about how to represent Wonderland during this period of history. Here's my thoughts:

Joey,

This looks like a good start. It has me thinking about the shape and meaning of each area...

Since the new symbol for Asylum is the Chaos Symbol, I think maybe we should consider a layout based on this shape (or the number contained in the shape: 8)... (we'll need to create a new "stage" to make this work)...

When we first enter the story we'll be in a stage called "Shock" which is just like a horrible nightmare of Alice's family dying in the fire. It's a part of Wonderland - since everything in her mind is a part of Wonderland - but after the first part of the story we'll never be able to go back there. It will be like a bomb and a fire at the start - and it will break Wonderland into many pieces. We can place this area in the center of the Wonderland map - like a volcano or a floating island with a massive crater in the middle - or a sort of inside-out black hole which is releasing fire and smoke and chaos into the world.

What remains of Wonderland needs to be floating around this central core. We've talked about this before... having each of the areas of Wonderland as a floating island - broken pieces of the world as it was before. (Some examples other artists follow).

I can imagine these pieces are floating in orbit around the "Chaos Core" just like the planets are orbiting the sun. Some of the floating islands may touch from time to time - allowing Alice to jump from one to another or complete some puzzle which requires alignment of the areas. So think about the map you're drawing like a map of the solar system. There can be variety in the orbits - they don't all have to be around the same plane ... think about an "atomic orbital" instead.

For now, you don't need to worry too much about the design/art of the areas included in the list which you've not yet explored. You can create generic floating island masses to represent those - and maybe make them unique by placing a large statue or building on them which is related to one of the Wonderland characters. We'll sort out the specifics of the "owners" of these places in the coming weeks.

The Shape of Chaos looks sick!!

Gabriele Gambucci

I was told there would be a delay in getting the codes out atm, as they are looking into automating the process. You're in the same boat as me, my plan is to just wait. It will get sorted eventually.

Well it's been a month since I earned my $35×3 print and I updated my Mysterious account as asked but I ain't received No Code. So I just need to say I want Frozen Caterpillar. And, building on the signing machine controversy, if possible, I'd like to have it signed by Joey.

Make Nine Inch Nails great again

Love the artwork . I like the idea of slumber being the 8th stage of grief to fit in with the Chaos Symbol. I prefer the idea of a massive crater being left in the middle after the shock stage .

Love love love it this is sooo good

Yes, it supposed to be a prequel. The game would take place when the Alice's parents die in the fire, when she was young

I feel like I've gotten confused, is this game going to be a Pre-quil to the first two games or a sequel to the first two games?

I am loving the idea of the floating islands! Basing the realms off of the stages of grief is beyond brilliant.

Who do we contact if we have not received our rewards?? I'm worried they got lost or stolen. I moved recently but updated my shipping address. Someone please help

I am blowned away by the hatter's art print! Omri's idea for the hatter's background is perfect. Also love the floating islands world.

Priscila Nosoma

man this art is BEAUTIFUL and creepy in equal measure and i LOVE it!

Haxxton VonWham

This is just beautiful and mind blowing! I've been following this game series since I spotted the first game on PC WAY before I was old enough to buy it (Kmart didn't care that they were selling it to a minor) With each post I get more and more intrigued and excited for this game. I've never been steered wrong with American and his brilliant mind. Keep up the wonderful work!

All of these illustrations and the world/stage concept looks both fantastic and immensely intriguing! It might not have been intentional, but the shape of an atom does sort of remind me of the Chaos Wheel, now that I think about it... Unrelated to the level topic, I think it would be quite interesting to incorporate more references to Alice's old, normal life (both game!Alice and real!Alice), perhaps more in-depth flashbacks? More references to Charles Dodgeson and his other works would be pretty interesting too!

INeedANameForThisHuh

P.S. I do wish the stream would start at 5PM PST instead. I hate having to leave the streams early because of work.

O my god I am completely in love with this idea! If you include grief it could possibly the harshest, darkest part of the game, possibly towards the end before acceptance. Honestly the American Mcgee Alice games have been a flag ship for games for me: I always play them! I have complete faith you can guys are gonna pull off an amazing game that will throw the socks of EA! (screw them, you are the best ever!)

Please consider selling on Mysterious some of the art that wasn't selected for the monthly print: Especially Mock Turtle's pool of tears <3

Make Nine Inch Nails great again

Well...everyone here have said everything to be said. Omri's work is awesome I grabbed my old teachers books to understand why this reminded me of the Id, ego, and the super ego subconscious theory. Boy am i loving this chart. For those who don't know, i'm talking about "Freud conception of human consciousness".

Saleh Abu-Rashid

The new artworks are stunning! And I absolutely love the idea of the different stages of grief/parts of wonderland being separated as floating islands. It could create some really beautiful and iconic designs/environments! And I've loved the idea of the stages of grief as different parts of the game from the start (and anything else relating to or representing parts of psychology). Looking forward to more updates! ♥

Omri's work is amazing! The eyes are so mesmerising <3 I love the idea of the floating islands and can't wait to see how the 7 stages of grief will look when incorporated into the layout ^-^ Sadly I won't be able to watch the stream this time but hope everyone else enjoys it :)

Have been hoping for some lighter, greener more wonderland like stages in the game, not just constant darkness and metal. Things are looking up in that regard, really nice images. Love the idea.

MUST...HAVE...BOTH...AS...ART...PRINTS!! Also, will we at long last get to see the fate of the King of Hearts, perhaps?

I like more stages of grief because it means more stages to play in the game! Super jazzed about that idea, love it's connection to the layout of the chaos symbol. Also, the queen being young makes sense to me, she was in madness returns anyways. I liked the art books explanation that she was to resemble a young Alice. Looking forward to the next live! :)

I like the first stage being in the center of the map, it can be a constant reminder of why you are there. What if some of the puzzles are used to connect the floating islands and make wonderland whole again?

Don't know how cool it is to add links here, but this page is quite evocative in describing the function of Daath <a href="https://www.wisdomsdoor.com/tol/daath.php" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.wisdomsdoor.com/tol/daath.php</a>

The eighth stage could be equivalent to Daath on the Tree of Life—something like (self) knowledge—the apple on the tree—we all know it's there, but no-one wants to talk about. A less adult version of this concept in this case, though can't for the life of me grasp what that might be

This is how you do it: <a href="https://www.patreon.com/posts/16427528">https://www.patreon.com/posts/16427528</a>

It's Red King who's dreaming of Alice <a href="https://i.pinimg.com/originals/99/71/53/997153e11bbdcb56676db9cfb6d2af30.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://i.pinimg.com/originals/99/71/53/997153e11bbdcb56676db9cfb6d2af30.jpg</a>

Make Nine Inch Nails great again

I am absolutely digging all of these ideas! I really can't think of where to begin for what I love best. The idea of each land we visit being a broken piece of her world is such an amazing idea and having them tied into the chaos symbol? Yes! Also that art? ON POINT! GORGEOUS! I would LOVE to of had the Red Queen piece as an art print. It's so.. ugh! I love it!!

So beautiful, I'm so excited for this. Your concept of what this game will be about makes in sooooo amazing. And as someone who has been through the stages of grief and survived and suffered through survivers guilt, I find this brought me to tears. The art work is amazing as always. And I'm so excited to play it. Omri is doing amazing work along side of all of you at mysterious. I'm super excitem that you are going back to the map idea, like in American mcgees alice. I personally loved that and missed it in the second one. The idea of the story book drawings dipicting different characters is kick ass! I would love to hear more about what came from the EA pitch, if that has happneed yet. Great work! I'm extremely excited to play!!!!

I'm speechless this art is beautiful💓 I. Of course love this version of the Queen and love the whole mask detail and the fire reflected in her eyes and this scene with garter mad me tear up a bit. 💔 I love the 7 state's and am excited to see how it affected the world layout will there be a map like in the first game??

I LOVE the idea of the floating islands and the connection to the chaos symbol. I would desire that we try to visit some new characters/new relationships with older ones-tie in Alice's youth to their lives: mock turtle, dodo, dormouse, jabberwocky, and the white king/knight. I'm quite stuck on the idea of the part in Alice where they discuss that she is but a part of his dream... Thoughts? As always, beautiful work. Blessed be.

Sarah Heist

All of it seems to be coming together very well. I love the idea of the stages of grief being a level to complete a map using the chaos symbol. I also like how the story is being approached because I did feel like there were some things that I couldn't connect between the games. The art is beautiful, especially the queen/Alice, I don't know what it says about me but I have always found the queen beautiful and the new art makes it even more so. Great job!

Stages of Grief, Oh man what a cool idea! It really does fit in with the timeline.

Okay before I go any further with reading this post, PLEASE tell me the first two artworks will be sent out as rewards for the monthly artwork tier! I neees it! So beautiful! 😍

You say to update the Patreon profile to include shipping info, but there doesn't seem to be a place to do that. Where should we add it?

Taharka

Hmm... yes.

The art is AMAZING as always. The red queen looks great, she has always been my favourite character in these games! I had the idea of her arguing with Alice but only focusing on the fire for points to make ("she only sees the fire") this results in Alice's rage (and possibly the return of hysteria mode). The Hatter fits depression perfectly in my opinion because he seems lost in the first game and lonely in the second showing how vulnerable he can be despite his physical strength and skills. The way the world is going to be laid out also seems interesting to, the black hole acting as one point that is now controlling Alice's life (which I can only assume grief can feel like). Maybe in the centre the jackbowocky could be born, at the centre of all the pain. From some of the descriptions of the art I hope that there will be boss fights like in the first game "he of course blames Alice" this could be used to symbolise her defeating each stage of grief. Hope this was useful. Bye.

I love it. It makes so much sense. The original red queen was by far the most intimidating.

Omri is so amazing. I really love his darker images, he puts so much story and personality into it, which makes it really come alive. The story in the Hatter image here is so sad, so dark, kinda sweet and sooo mad, and it makes the hatter feel very human and relatable. It's understandable, that he wants to save his friends, the trauma of it all make his means to it questionable (at the very least), which also relates well to Alice and her story, and everything in Wonderland being a manifestation of her own struggles. I'll try not to go on about. It just fits sooo well on so many levels! Also, I'm getting Omris book &lt;3 Gorgeous concepts for the world. I really love the idea of having to align the worlds in order to progress. Psychologically it makes sense. You have to "connect the dots", understand it in order to move on to the next stage in the grief system, and it feels like restoring order to the chaos in the world and thus her mind.

I actually like the idea of the 7stages of grief. (Especially know everything that Alice went through her life it seems to be the right direction and I love it). The art work is phenomenal I can’t wait to see where this goes 😁😁😁😁❤️❤️❤️❤️

We're working on the coin design and will figure out timing... probably something we'll launch next month. As far as the END of the goal... that depends on how quickly we attract new people to Patreon and when we reach the Patron goal (at whatever level it's set). Keep in mind you only need to be at the required pledge level for the moment when the pledges related to that goal are collected. After that you can drop back down to your usual level - it's a bit of a hack, but we won't hold it against you :)

American McGee

Omri is ridiculously talented, the March Hare in the oxygen mask is a brilliant touch. Can't wait to get my copy of Nuerva. When talking about an additional stage of grief being required I like the idea of there being a moment of despair. A point where she is at the brink of all hope being lost after depression and then, by some mechanic or story arch she finds herself through it and into the testing phase. So she is literally at a point where it is abject and recovery is almost inconceivable to her but either a profound epiphany or the influence of someone/something within wonderland (her psyche) reveals a path to salvation.

I love the "7 stages of grief" concept! It goes so well with Alice's story and I think it will look amazing as a map.

What exactly do you see? I can see all the images. Maybe send me a screenshot? mysterious @ americanmcgee.com

American McGee

I like this art A LOT! Question - when coin goal will start/end?

The broken Wonderland reminds me of one of the parts of "Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries" - or rather, when I first played Woolfe, I described that section as "Wonderland meets Zendikar". Good fun!
