EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE, ALL AT ONCE
Added 2022-05-27 07:48:33 +0000 UTCJust saw it. I liked the concept, and thought it was fun and refreshing, had some imaginative things that pleased me. But...it's overrated as far as I'm concerned. It's overstuffed, and it thinks it's got some great handle on the meaning of life, but I found its way of conveying that, quite reductive as it went on. Preachy and self-important but...it's enjoyable. Just not some masterpiece to me, like everyone hypes it up to be. I know a lot of people were moved by the end of it, but to me the sentiment felt cheap...and it's ultimate message, is kinda unfocused. What do you guys think? I'm going to try and get a review out for it before the streaming date, if time permits.

For sure. I actually agree with a lot of what you say too. Fun film, but a bit much overall, and I didnt connect to it in the way it seemed to really be trying to push for.

2022-05-31 23:03:40 +0000 UTCI agree. Was very reluctant at first to watch as everyone kept pestering me to just watch it. I’ll admit it was quite good and I did enjoy it overall but not to the levels everyone was hyping it up to be. To a point I didn’t want to talk about it because I knew I’d get backlash for not being star-struck by it. For me it was overstuffed, to where things started to not make sense and they didn’t need to. Compounded with the rapid pacing, I was really exhausted by the end. By the staircase fight scene came around, it felt dragged and I just wanted it to end. That being said I do think it was a fantastic movie. I appreciate the overall theme and underlying messages. There’s also a cultural appeal that I can see behind it, that some can resonate to. Just my takeaways.

2022-05-31 09:05:40 +0000 UTCMy review would be almost exactly word-for-word yours. Imaginative but easily forgotten and at times cloying. … But maybe I’m just deeply depressed and in denial about it, hahahah.

2022-05-28 22:13:12 +0000 UTCWhat you are doing is assuming something of someone you know nothing about, and then using that as some sort of measuring stick for the merit of the film...which is insulting.

2022-05-28 02:30:16 +0000 UTCI don't think my comment is so different from suggesting a person doesn't like a comedy because they don't share its sense of humor or they don't like a drama because they don't have the patience for it. Interpretation of art requires two entities -- the art and the interpreter and both play a significant role in the subsequent analysis. Everything Everywhere All At Once is quite literally ABOUT generational depression so the prevalence of that phenomenon in viewers of the movie seems very relevant to discussing it so I don't think "it's really not about the film at all is it?" is fair. I did not intend to shitpost a low-effort putdown. I intended to talk about the film and why people respond to it differently. It's a film about fairly tense subject material so in this instance I have caused offense, but I believed this community you've curated did not shy away from those conversations even if they can be difficult. At the same time, I don't intend to push my views where they're not wanted -- which is clearly the case in this instance.

2022-05-28 02:13:12 +0000 UTCA cheap shot. I expect it from random youtubers who are easily butthurt but...I expect better from Patrons.

2022-05-27 20:14:33 +0000 UTCI don't appreciate that at all. When people use a low blow like that, it's really not about the film at all is it? When someone disagrees with you...I do not think this is the way to handle it.

2022-05-27 18:38:55 +0000 UTCI went in with the expectation that it would be a film designed to win the approval of Marvel fans who maybe like an A24 film every now and then. Style over substance. I was very very wrong. The mother-daughter relationship was so resonant and surprisingly nuanced. Their confrontation at the end really went in a direction that I wasn’t expecting. There’s a moment in their conversation when you think understanding has been earned, but it actually hasn’t. There’s still a further level of honesty to be expressed, and it is. You say it’s overstuffed and I can definitely understand that, but I think it’s kind of the point to feel like that. It’s a once in a blue moon experience hitting as many sensory areas as possible. I usually find a movie to be overstuffed if the message gets lost in the overwhelming aesthetic and I don’t think it does at all. And it’s such a good way of using the multiverse concept purposefully. It feels like Marvel uses it to plug sequels and advertise for the Avengers, but this used it to illustrate our beautiful and insignificant existence in this giant little world. One of the most powerful existential movies I’ve ever seen. I previously held the view that it was only art house films that take themselves very seriously (2001, Solaris, Enter the Void, Synecdoche New York) that could make me contemplate my own existence to that degree. But I left the theater buzzing with glee that a movie with a universe in which people have hot dogs for fingers could do the same. Not saying it’s as good as those, but the fact that it gave me something that I care to contemplate to the same degree as those other films is what makes it one of my favorite films of the decade so far.

2022-05-27 13:48:05 +0000 UTCIts my favorite movie experience in years. Not only did I find it massively entertaining as an absurdist action comedy, I found the whole message of using kindness, positive and humor as an antidote for existential dread refreshing as hell. And what I find even more amazing is that among the chaos and big ideas, I never felt like it got away from its core story about a family breaking apart. Everything still felt very character driven and about the relationships between either Evelyn and Joy or Evelyn and Waymond. As for the ending, after over half a decade of seemingly non-stop doom and gloom, the borderline naively optimistic outlook of this movie was the shot of positivity that I really needed. And I say borderline naive because I don't think it is. I think as a culture we want to assume anyone that can find hope in the world right now is just being ignorant but I actually think finding hope and happiness inspite of everything takes a lot more effort than just giving into the negativity. For me personally, it genuinely was a stepping stone to help lift me out of an emotional funk I've been in for a few years since graduating college. I understand why it didn't work for you and it would seem a few people here on the Patreon but personally I see it as a delightful, once in a decade gift that I truly cherish.

2022-05-27 13:10:26 +0000 UTCWell, the final message would fit on a greeting card. I can't figure out if it's a Marvel movie for more serious cinephiles, or an attempt at a more meaningful movie aimed at Marvel fans to let them know there's more to movies. It definitely wasn't a good attempt at either, the fight scenes alone were way too numerous (and long), they dragged on and on. Not too different from a mindless action flick.

2022-05-27 11:55:02 +0000 UTCHonestly my interpretation of people who say it’s “fine” and recognize why people like it but don’t themselves … I assume those people are just deeply depressed and in denial about it. That’s my inappropriate psychological armchair. Hope you’re doing well!

2022-05-27 11:49:53 +0000 UTCVery strong disagree. I thought the film was very smart to use absurdist humor to disarm people’s hesitancy or self-importance to discuss existential issues like generational depression. People close up and reject things they don’t want to hear and this film was so good at leaving you exposed then delivering a gut punch. It’s probably a film that’ll age poorly when better times are around but for the current moment it is a beautiful film that I can only perceive as a total victory for humanity it is so successful at what it does.

2022-05-27 11:48:34 +0000 UTCI saw this 3 times in the theater and absolutely loved it. I related to Joy’s story a lot which is probably why I was so moved by the ending, but overall I was really impressed with this movie from the visuals to the performances to the surprisingly simplistic message. In an age of remakes/reboots, marvel projects and nostalgia bait, this was such a refreshing watch and this is a movie I’ll keep going back to for years to come.
