Mermaid in the Desert
Added 2022-09-16 21:21:06 +0000 UTCI love these pasties by the Pastie Chef. I've always wanted shells that stay on like they do in the fantasy art. I've been slowly working on my "mersona" as the mermaid community calls it. I like mermaids, but for artistic reasons I love having a mermaid persona. It's about what ther mermaid stands for (at least in my mind). A water spirit or nymph. There is this sexuality to mermaids that is projected on to them, but they seem asexual or homosexual in a lot of myths other than the best known one, The Little Mermaid. I get into the identity of a natural creature mad eout to be a beautiful, sexual mystery but is impossible to really know or touch. For starters: where's the vagina? They often seem more interested in killing men than having sex with them. Yet still men are seduced by them knowing full well from stories that they're deadly. I think the irony in the story is funny to me too. I enjoy a bit of dark humor. This persona is more than the myths but a representation of water which inspires me for its strength and passion as well as how it appears hard and soft in art. A creature that can embrace that seems strong but empathetic. From my own work in water, I've learned how much there is no fighting water but accepting its current either by getting out or directing poses with it.
I love this extra juxtaposition in Arizona. The desert and Saguro with the lake. When I edited these photos I took inspiration from Birth of Venus, so the colors have an antique feel, but also I was inspired by the late artist Wes Freed. There is a dark humor, sexuality, and danger in the characters of his work. So while I wanted the natural and beautiful sensuality of Aphrodite, I also wanted a bit of the tongue in cheek joy. It's a dark mood to be a mermaid in the desert.
